The art of snow sculpture, apparently, has
a great deal to do with the way you hold
your mouth, as the young lady here
demonstrates for us. The sculptures made
by the students at both the schools in
Lucknow are quite imaginative, especially
the actual size luge track made by the kids
over at the Lucknow Christian School. To
the left, a student from the Lucknow Cen-
tralized Public School shows great concen-
tration as he carves a bobsled out of ice.
The sculptures are part of the annual com-
petition organized by the local Kinsmen.
Be sure to have a look at them the next
time you drive by the school. (Rob Bundy

Olympic
art work
By Bonnie Hallam
and Chris Humphrey
Grade 1
Grade 1 has enjoyed having helpers
from Grade 5 to assist with our Farm
Language Centres. Our Grade 5 Reading
partners helped us read the directions, and
do the work on the cards.
On Wednesday, the South African Olym-
pic team won most points for Dress -Up
Day, and shared "Bean Sprout
Casserole", Rice and Chow Mein Noodle"
cookies with the China Team. Congratula-
tions to the effort of each team. You all
Looked great!
Grade 1/2
This week we have developed our Olym-
pic vocabulary and we are watching the
Olympic standings of different countries.
We have also continued working on our
China centres. We appreciate the help
from our volunteer mothers in our cooking
centres. The fortune cookies have been
tasty!
It was fun dressing up on Wedesday in
costumes representing our Olympic house
league countries. On Friday, we all work-
ed hard building snow sculptures with our
house league countries.
Grade 2/3
Many children participated in the
Chinese New Year by proudly wearing the
costumes for their Olympic Country. We
had some very colourful outfits. Martyn,
Matthew, Julie, Kristi, Sarah, Trevor and
George took their "Gardens in a Jar"
down to the Horticultural meeting. They
loved showing everybody what they had
done at school.
On Thursday the students enjoyed help-
ing to create Olympic snow sculptures out
in the schoolyard. Nice work gang!
Grade 3/4
Grade 3/4 returned to school Monday,
still stuffed from eating their "Valentine's
Day goodies". We have started Olympic
game centres in Environmental Studies
and are learning a lot about the athletes,
winter sports, and Olympic traditions and
customs. We are really enjoying the class
novel, "The Big Friendly Giant", inwhich
a giant kidnaps a little girl and whisks her
away to Giantland to have many adven-
tures. We are finished writing all the let-
ters of the alphabet.
Grade 4
We have dressed for our country, divid-
ed numbers, and studied legends this
week. We have hurdled down mountains,
jumped from awesome heights, fired
pucks and spin around in continuous
circles.
All this and we still had time and energy
left to produce amazing works of art!
Grade 6/7
The Grade 6/7 class are quite active with
the Olympic events. They built snow
LCPS
SNSIDER
sculptures, and answer the Olympic quiz
each morning. In art class they are sket-
ching faces of people from many
countries.
Grade 7/8
We have adapted some of our programs
this week to accommodate the Olympics.
Some of our activities have included
Greek mythology, Olympic trivia and even
the Great L.C.P.S. Slalom race. Other
varied Olympic experiences will continue
next week. We, are also hoping to have a
Mini Winter Games next Thursday if the
weather co-operates.
Grade 8
The Olympics have been the dominant
theme for our English program this week
in Grade 8. We have had a chance to view
and learn about the ancient Olympic which
originated in Olympia Greece. Our class is
divided into Olympic team colours and are
competing m such areas as Olympic trivia,
and general knowledge of the Games.
We are cheering Canada on and wat-
ching the games and anticipating their
first medal.
Ripiey WMS
The February meeting of Knox Ripley
afternoon Women's Missionary Society met
at Huron Villa with Jean Dadson as hostess.
President Mrs. Hackett opened the
meeting with words of welcome and a poem.
Bette MacLeod had the program. She
read a poem, "In the silent of the stars".
The scripture 1st corinthians ch. 13 - verses
1 - 13. Her topic was "Women of the Bible"
telling of the great love for Jesus these
women had. Some of the women she spoke of
were Hanna, Sarah, Debra, Anna, Rachel,
Noah's wife and daughters and many others
she concluded with prayer.
Hymn "What a friend we have in Jesus"
was sung. The January minutes read and
roll call a verse on Love was answered by
eight members and one visitor.
Mrs. Hackett gave a prayer. A report of
the Maitland Presbyterial was given by
Bette MacLeod and Hazel MacDonald. A
card was signed to be sent to Jim Tout in
Hospital.
The collection taken and dedicated.
Mrs. Hackett and helpers served a Lunch
and social time was spent.
