Mushball tourney
The Lucknow and District Kinsmen and
Kinettes Clubs recently introduced the
residents of the village to the exciting
sport of Mushball. The game, which is
similar to slowpitch except that it is played
in the snow with a soft centred ball, proved
to be a very popular sport.
There were initially some 14 teams lined
up for the February 13 Mushball Tourney
but, unfortunately, some adverse weather
conditions early in the day reduced the
team count to ten at the noon starting time.
Each team was guaranteed two games
with the top four teams advancing to the
finals on a points system. The semi-final
match -ups saw the Lucknow Oldtimers
Hockey Team take on the "Celebrate in
'88" Reunion Team on one side while the
Holyrood Butchers Hockey Team squared
off against the Mix and Match Team on the
other.
The superior conditioning of the two
hockey teams saw them advance to the
final game. Through a combination of good
sportsmanship and good sense, the But-
chers and the Oldtimers decided to cancel
the final game, declare themselves co -
winners, and proceed to the Community
Centre to discuss in detail the finer points
of the sport.
Both teams did just that and were
presented with mugs supplied by Carling
Breweries for their efforts.
The best dressed team of the day -long
tournament was, without question, the
Reunion Team who adorned themselves in
long underwear spray painted with adver-
tising for the Lucknow Reunion scheduled
for this summer.
The best named team would be the
Harlem Snow Trotters.
The emcee for the event was Steve
Chamney who kept everyone entertained
with his flowing oratory of the
proceedings.
The tourney MVP would have to be
Mother Nature who provided excellent
snow conditions once the early morning
storm subsided.
The big winner of the day was, of course,
the Lucknow Sports Complex. A total of
$980.00 in profits was turned over by the
Kinsmen to the Sports Complex Fund.
It was a great day for Mushball fans and
players alike and there is hopes that this
will become an annual event in the village.
