CGIT study handicapped
Lucknow CGIT enjoyed an overnight at
the United Church. The evening began
with Olympic games led by Janine Helm.
The theme was the Handicapped and Us.
Looking at yourself, each did an exercise
on Things I Wish I Could Change and Ways
I'm Different That Make Me Proud. A
discussion followed on how we can cope
with differences, what is a handicap and
different kinds of handicaps.
Movies viewed were -A Day in the Life of
Bonnie Consolo, a woman born with no
arms, Blind Sunday, about Lee an indepen-
dent, blind teenager and Love Mary about
the amazing accomplishments of a girl
who had dyslexia.
Maurice Miltenburg graduated from
Fanshawe College's Motor Vehicle
Mechanic Apprenticeship Program
recently, receiving his Class 'A' License.
He has successfully written the govern-
ment exams and has received his Inter-
provincial Certificate as well.
Maurice is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Marinus Miltenburg of RR 7 Lucknow.
All participated in experiences to
simulate blindness, deafness, lack of use of
limbs, use of a wheelchair and dyslexia.
Leader Julie Nicholson told about special
children she works with and games they
enjoy. Do's and Don'ts when meeting so-
meone with disabilities were read.
Each person was given a handicapped
case study to "put yourself in their shoes".
They thought of what they would be
thankful for if they were that person.
Everyone got warmed up with aerobic
exercises on Saturday morning. The morn-
ing thought was How Tall Are You? by
Joni Eareckson Tada, a quadriplegic who
writes books, makes records, paints with
her mouth and speaks to inspire others.
After breakfast, all joined in a discussion
of stories about young people handling
their own handicaps and those of the peo-
ple around them.
The War Amps new movie, The Nakiska
Kids, showing 17 child amputees skiing at
Nakisha, the site for downhill ski events at
the Winter Olympics, once again showed
the achievements of handicapped persons.
