years of service
1988 will mark the 100th anniversary of
the Ministry of Agriculture and Food in
Ontario. One hundred years ago
agriculture was separated from other
branches of government activity and
made the sole responsibility of one
minister.
Charles A. Drury was the first minister
of the Department of Agriculture. He was
sworn in on May 1st, 1888, having a staff of
35 within the entire ministry. Today the
ministry employs over 1500 people, across
the province.
The purpose of the 1988 celebration is to
create an awareness in the general farm
population. Provincially, a number of
events will be held throughout the year. As
part of the centennial celebrations the
Ministry of Agriculture and Food will pre-
sent awards to individuals who have made
significant contributions to the agriculture
and food industry.

At a meeting of The Bruce County Board
of Education held on February 2, 1988, the
Board presented an Award of Excellence
to the Bruce County Museum in recogni-
tion of the outstanding contribution made
by museum staff to the education of
students from Bruce County schools.
Clarke Birchard, the Board of Educa-
tion's Supervisor of Outdoor Education,
stated that in recent years Barbara Ribey,
curator, Scott Gillies, assistant curator
and other museum staff have done a great
deal of work developing programs that
made use of museum resources to support
the social•studies and history curriculum
of the.schools. The success and popularity
of these progranis have been reflected in a
dramatic increase in museum attendance
by school groups.
In presenting the award, Board Chair-
man, Alma Conn -Armstrong remarked
that the students, teachers and Board are
pleased to recognize, thank and commend
the Museum for its contribution to heritage
education.
In accepting the award, Barbara Ribey
reported that during the calendar year
1987, 4338 students participated in museum
programs which included topics such as
Chores and Chuckles, Plower Thanksgiv-
ing, Passing the Torch, Christmas Past
and Dinosaurs. The most popular of these
programs was the Dinosaurs program

has announced funding approval for the
Huron County Pioneer Museum in the

dismantled for storage; and in building ad-

Section 38 is a program for people who
are unemployed and in receipt of
unemployment benefits. These people will
continue to receive benefits at an enhanc-

The agriculture industry has had many
changes in one hundred years. It has mov-
ed from a very labour-intensive industry to
a highly technical business. During 1988
the Ministry of Agriculture is paying
tribute to the achievements of the agri-
food industry over the past 100 years. Dur-
ing this year we will include historical
points of interest in our weekly press
releases. Watch for them in upcoming
weeks!
