William Graham Habkirk
William Graham Habkirk, 72, of R. 2
Springfield, a well-known trainer of stan-
dardbred horses, died at St. Thomas -Elgin
General Hospital, Tuesday, January 19,
1988.
Born in Kincardine, on October 17, 1915,
he was a son of the late William and
Margaret (Graham) Habkirk.
A resident of the Aylmer area for the last
30 years, Mr. Habkirk was active in the
standardbred horse racing industry for 60
years.
Mr. Habkirk was a charter member bf
the Canadian Trotting Association and a
director of the Ontario Harness
Horseman's Association.
He had been named to the Wall of Fame
at Western Fair Raceway in London, and
was also named senior citizen of the year
in 1985 by the Ontario Harness Horseman's
Association.
Bruce Johnston of Aylmer, publisher of
The Canadian Sportsman, a periodical on
Canadian horse racing, said he knew Mr.
Habkirk most of his life.
Mr. Habkirk drove his first harness
horse race in 1926 and his last in 1986.
Mr. Johnston said he didn't know of any
other driver whose career had spanned 60
years.
"He. was known as a real tough com-
petitor," Mr. Johnston said, adding Mr.
Habkirk was also one of the best trainers
of trotters in Canada.
At one time during the 1960s, Mr.
Habkirk trained three of the best trotters
in Canada, Anne Gallon, Nathan Hanover
and Vera Riddell.
His best horse ever was Camner. chosen
in 1968 as the Canadian standardbred
horse of the year.
''He was very well respected for his skill
with the trotters," Mr: Johnston said. '
John Harris of Aylmer, who knew Mr.
.Habkirk for 30 years and owned horses
trained by him, said "He was one of the
best rnen to get trotters going.."
Other trainers would come to Mr.
Habkirk for help when they had problems
with trotters, and he especially enjoyed
working with young horses, Mr. Harris
said.
Mr. Habkirk "got me started in the
horse business," recalled standardbred
stable owner Joe Falkenham.
Mr. Habkirk, a man of strong convic-
tions, was "one of the best," Mr.
Falkenham said, adding "He was a great
trotting man."
He was also a good friend, Mr.
Falkenham said.
"He'd do anything to help you. He was
always there is you needed him."
Many area trainers learned their skills
from him, Mr. Falkenham said.
Mr. Habkirk is survivedby his wife
Sadie (Pettigrew) Habkirk; son Robert
Habkirk of Aylmer; daughters Mrs. Betty
(Charles) Winer of Perry, New York,
Mrs. Mary Hewitt of Aylmer and Mrs.
Peggie (Allan) Franklin of Aylmer; and
three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by son George in
1959, brother Donald Habkirk and sisters
Bessie and Mary Bell Habkirk.
Pastor Lorne S. Trudgian of London con-
ducted the funeral service from H.A. Keb-
bel Funeral Home, Aylmer, on Friday,
January 22, 1988.
Mr. Habkirk was buried in Aylmer
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wayne Stone, Joel
Falkenham, Bruce Johnston, John Harris,
Clair Minler and Ted Hatt.
Flower bearers were Brian Haskell,
Harold Swartzentruper, Fred Milmine,
Jack Harvey, Evan McGugan and Joe
