A shower for Colleen
A community shower was held on Sat.
afternoon for bride-to-be Colleen Adams in
the United Church basement in
Whitechurch.
Mrs. Agnes Farrier was pianist for a
sing song with Mrs. Jean Ross as leader.
Following this Mildred McClenaghan was
chairlady for a short programme with a
reading by Alice Moore "How to Preserve
a husband".
Mildred McClenaghan spoke a few
words to the bride. Richelle Sleightholm
gave a bridal reading.
Mrs. Janet Waterworth of Goderich, Col-
leen's attendant and Mrs. Jeanne
Hamilton of Lucknow helped open - the
gifts.
Colleen thanked everyone for the
beautiful gifts, grace was sung and the
ladies of the church served a delicious
lunch.
Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Noles'and family of
Crediton and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd
Sleightholm and family of Brantford
visited over the weekend with Mr. and
Mrs. Elmer Sleightholm. Mrs. Sleightholm
and Richelle attended the shower for Col-
leen Adams on Sat. afternoon. Mr. and
Mrs. Wallace Milligan, Whitechurch, and
Mr. and Mrs. Allan Falconer, Timmy,
Amy of Goderich visited on Sunday with
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Glover and Brandi of
Sarnia to celebrate Brandi's birthday.
Mrs. Isobel Tiffin visited a few days with
Mrs. Wesley Tiffin and has returned to
Thedford with Mrs. Hugh McMillan for a
visit.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Elliott returned
home Thursday after visiting relatives in
Arizona.
Mrs. Dave Gibb, Mildred McClenaghan
and Agnes Farrier attended the Huron
erth Presbytery meeting held in Clinton
1 st week.
Whitechurch United Church
Whitechurch United Church held its an-
nual meeting on Jan. 26 at 8 PM.
Rev. John Neilson opened with scripture
and prayer. Rev. Neilson was chairman
and Evelyn Gibb acted as sec. for the
meeting.
The reports were read and a motion was
,made to accept them.
Elmer Sleightholm was elected the
WHITE CHURCH
chairman of the Board of Stewards while
Clifford Laidlaw was elected a clerk of ses-
sion. Elected to the trustee board for a 6
yr. period were Russel Chapman, Clifford
Laidlaw and Elmer Sleightholm.
Re -appointed to the Board of Stewards
for a 3 yr. term is Dave Gibb, Elizabeth
Tiffin and Alice Moore.
They decided to have every family plan
for the United Church Observer. 'The
church objective was reached for the year
and courtesies were given to all who made
their church year a successful one.
• U.C.W. Meeting
The U.C.W. meeting of the Whitechurch
United Church ladies was held on Wednes-
day Feb. 3 at 2 PM at the home of Mrs.
Russel Chapman.
Mrs. Agnes Farrier gave the call to wor-
ship. Mrs. Elmer Sleightholm read the
scripture from Deuteronomy chapter 6
4-18 and • explained the meaning of the
scripture and followed with prayer.
Mrs. Farrier read an article on the
World Day of Prayer prepared by the
Women of Brazil. It is the eighth country in
the world in economy with lots of poverty
and largest Roman Catholic country in the
world. Mrs. Farrier also read an article on
refugees.
Mrs. Clifford Laidlaw led in a Bible
study on Acts 23-11:35 which was very well
done and followed with prayer.
Offering was received followed with
prayer by Mrs. Farrier. Minutes of the
meeting were read.
The roll call was answered by 12
members by "Should we open our doors to
Refugees." Mrs. Durnin moved to have
lunch following World Day of Prayer ser-
vice, this was seconded by Mildred
McClenaghan.
Mrs. Farrier gave an account of the
Huron -Perth presbytery meeting held in
Clinton recently.
Rev. and Mrs. Neilson thanked the
ladiesfortheir get well card when she was
in London hospital. Rev. John Neilson clos-
ed with prayer.
Pray for speedy recovery
Word was received in the area recently
that Ross MacKenzie of Goderich and
formerly of Lochalsh, has been admitted
to the Goderich hospital. Hopefully he is
now at home and improving nicely. Get
well soon, Ross, we are all praying for
your speedy recovery.
Those that visited with Stella Irwin to
help her celebrate her 87th birthday were
Charles and Mayme Wilkins of Ashfield
Township, Charles and Ruby Reach of
Woodstock and also Larry, Janet and
Adam Wilkins of Ashfield. Happy birthday
to Mrs. Irwin.
The weekend proved to be very en-
joyable as well as exciting for Kae
Webster. First of all, Friday evening saw
Cecil come home; Saturday noon had her
son-in-law and granddaughter, Atlee and
Tricia Wise of Arkon, Ohio, come in; and
shortly after that, the family left to pick up
Jim in Waterloo.
The group Continued on to Niagara Falls
to see the Festival of Lights. Kae reports
that the lights were lovely Saturday
evening.
On Sunday, the family crossed over the
border to view the falls from the American
side. It was the first time Kae had seen the
falls from that vantage point. She says she
found them—WIT-nice and so much better
thatn viewing them from across the gorge.
It was a perfect weekend for the family;
one without snow and not too cold.
Sharlene Jones of Guelph was home on
the weekend to visit with her parents
Barry and Betty Jones.
Louise Miller of Palmerston spent a cou-
ple of days this past week with her mother
and sister, Rhetta and Marion
MacLennan.

Father was quickly initiated back into
our wintry climate when he had to play
host to approximately 40 people in the
church hall after 15 cars were forced to a
stop by the severe weather on Friday
evening.
The storm -stayed travellers were most
appreciative of the chance to get out of the
cold and snow and of the coffee and cookies
Father most graciously served. Welcome
back Father!
The Catholic Women's League held their
regular monthly meeting in the parish hall
on Monday evening, Feb. •1 with President
Denise Dalton presiding.
On the agenda was discussion of and
preparation for the presentation to be
given by Constable David Packer of Toron-
to at the parish hall on Tuesday, Feb. 16th
at 8:00 p.m. His first scheduled speaking
date of Feb. 9th had to be cancelled
because of a work conflict.
Also discussed was the Marian Grotto
and various fund raising projects. Dolores
•van Osch mentioned that the spring 4-H
club would be on outdoor living. The 4-H
club is open to boys and girls 12 years of
age by January 1988. Anyone interested is
asked to contact Dolores at 529-7441. ,
The next meeting of the CWL will be
Monday evening, March 7th. The meeting
opened with the League Prayer and con-
cluded with the prayer to "Our Lady of
Good Counsel".
The Knights of Columbus held an ex-
ecutive ' meeting Tuesday . evening, Feb.
2nd.
The last Wednesday of January two
members of the CWL helped in the pain-
ting of a mural at Maitland Manor in
Goderich.
Mia Dalton is in the final stages of her

preparations for departure for service as a
lay missionary in Haiti before she leaves
on Feb. 16th. She has a speaking engage-
ment at Sacred Heart High School in
Walkerton talking about the conditions and
what she plans and hopes to be doing over
the next several months she will be spen-
ding in Haita.
When in Haiti, she will be staying with
Mother Teresa's Sisters of Charity. As
Haiti is the poorest country in the western
hemisphere and continues to suffer severe
oppression and injustice, anyone wishing
to help alleviate these conditions in any
way can contact Mia at 529-7530.
Constable Marshall is continuing his
weekly visits to the Grades 5-8 classes in
conjunction with the V.I.P. Program
(values, peer, and influences).
The Grades 4-8's have been busy this
past week preparing, memorizing and
presenting speeches for the public speak-
ing contest to be held in the school gym on •
Wednesday, Feb. 10th.
Winners from each class have the oppor-
tunity to present their speeches in the gym
'th the winners going on to zone finals.

first, second and third place.
The staff and students had the opportuni-
ty to once again enjoy skating at the arena
in Goderich on Friday afternoon, Feb. 5th.
The parents and students of the 7/8 class
are preparing for a pancake breakfast to
be held in the church hall on Sunday, Feb.
14th at 11:30 a.m. This is a project to help
raise funds for school- trips and various
activities.

Angela Dawn Bell, daughter of Wayne
and Laurie, was baptized at the South
Kinloss Presbyterian Church recently.
Those attending a special dinner back at
the Bell home were Rev. and Mrs, Ram-
say, Lucknow, grandparents Wilma and
Leonard Clarke, Don and Ruth Bell, Bev
Beyersbergen, Phyllis Wallace of London,
and Bonnie and Ed Davidson of Parry
Sound.
The Ripley No -Stars played five games
of hockey in the 'C' division for the McMur-
try Cup in Scarborough this past weekend.
For their efforst they came home as
champions.
Jennifer, Shane and Johnathan MacKin-
non spent the weekend with their gran ,-
parents Fraser and Doric MacKinnon.
