Grade One has been busy finishing up
their Clifford language centres. They sure
have made good adventures for Clifford in'
the sandbox and painted some great Clif-
fords. Michael Irwin was 'special me' this
week and brought lots of interesting pic-
tures of himself for our mirror.
Grade One would like to thank Mrs.
Mowbray for teaching them on Thursday
when Mrs. Bell was sick. They also say
good-bye to Amy Keller and wish her luck
in her new home in Kitchener.
Grade One - Two
This was the last week of our 'Snow and
Ice' unit. Earlier in the week we filled a jar
with snow and watched it melt. We found
that there was some dirt in the bottom of
. the jar and that snow is not as clean as it
looks. After discussing the disadvantages
of snow, most of us agreed that despite the
disadvantages, snow is lots of fun.
Grade Two - Three
Everyone is working very hard prepar-
ing a speech to present to the class in
February. We have been creating our very
own 'perk -a -books'. Next week we will
share them with others.
Grade Three - Four
This class is having an exciting time
with the `Quick Draw' multiplication
drills. Multiplication questions are given
to a pair of students, 'with the winner ad-
vancing to take on their next opponent. An -
exercise in giving oral directions was
undertaken by their class. It took the class
15 minutes to get Mr. Dennis to put on a
winter coat properly. They are working
hard on their speeches and will start
presenting them to the class next week.
Grade Four - Five
We are studying maps, atlasses, and
globes. In February we are having a
French auction. We have to earn special
money by saying certain things.
Grade Five
This week we have just finished our E.S.
projects and are working on our tests. On
Wednesday we read to the Grade l's, it was
fun. We also did Super Sundaes for
creative writing. We are working on our
own projects. In math we are learning ad-
ding and subtracting fractions. Our
'Superstar' this week is Heather Askes.
Grade Six - Seven
We have had a few tests, some done very
well, some done not so well. Many students
watched the volleyball game on Tuesday
in the gymn featuring the OPP's and the
Lucknow School teams. The boys beat
them once and lostonce. We are also work-
ing on our speeches.
Grade Seven - Eight
By the time this paper is out, we will
have been on our ski trip to Talisman
Mountain Resort. Hopefully the weather
will cooperate: cold enough for good ski
conditions and clear enough to get there.
They have also just received word that
performing arts group, Tanglefoot will be
at the school on March 11. Their presenta-
tion will support our history program by
telling of the coming of the Loyalists.
Grade Eight
This class has also been working on
speeches for next week. There have been
many original topics chosen by the
students. They are looking forward to the
ski trip.
Both the boys and girls volleyball teams
went to the tournament Thursday. The
girls gave a tough fight but had hard com-
petition. The boys came back. with the run-
nerup pennant and play again a • week
Saturday.
Students enjoy trip
By Ruth Anne Durnin
And Teresa Jefferson
The Kindergarten II class really enjoyed
their recent trip to the Wawanosh Conser-
vation Area. They are quite excited about
working on the computers that are in .our
school.
Mrs. Paolin's Kindergarten class is
beginning some work on 'Snow' and they
will be doing some Valentine work. They
had a good visit to the Wawanosh Nature
Centre and they saw rabbit tracks and
deer tracks. It was lots of fun.
Miss Jewitt's Grade 1 class has been do-
ing winter activities. They made a
snowman out of paper and some snowflake
people. They have been learning about the
letters F, J, and M.
Some of Mrs. Ottewell's Grade 3
students did surveys that they later graph-
ed. They found out that Phys. Ed. is Rm.
10's favourite subject. This week they wat-
ched the movie "Clown" about a boy
whose lost dog became lead dog for a blind
man. It made them feel both sad and hap-
py. Congratulations to Kelly McNee who
was the first to finish all her mitten ac-
tivities. She did a super job too. Happy Bir-
thday to Mike Passmore ( Jan. 29) and Tim
Spivak (Jan. 30 ).
Mrs. Tebbutts Grade 6 class is doing
research on animal covering. They got to
the library every day for almost an hour.
We each picked animals out of a hat. They
have to do a bibliography and research on
the animal that we drew from the hat, and
they must draw the animal they picked.
Mr. Liddle's Grade 7 class had a visitor
and her name is Regan Brown. She's from
Owen Sound and her school is Holland
Chatsworth. She's Tricia Brown's cousin.
She visited on Jan. 29. The class has
started speeches and are working with ex-
ponents in Math. They also welcome
Maribeth back for math. They are enjoy-
ing working on the Icons. They are work-
ing on Olympic Characters in art while in
Spelling they are doing T.V. shows. In gym
they are doing gymnastics. During history
they are studying Indians and in
BROOKSIDE

geography they are investigating
temperature and precipitation. Happy bir-
thday to Christina Todd.
Room 12 had a math test on exponents
and expressions on January 28th. They are
on the last step of Take -45, with their
science projects. The Grade 7 home ec.
class made farewell pancakes on their last
day January 27th. The shop class finished
up any projects and cleaned out their
lockers. They have drawn names for
speeches and are, starting to say them on
Monday February lst.
Mr. Hazlitt's Grade 8 class are working
on marionettes. Mrs. Graham was in at the
first of the week to help to shape the
marionette's head. Now they are going to
write plays and act them out. Happy birth-
day to Tricia Corkum.
The Dinosaur Den Treehouse is still stu-
dying the Olympics. They are learning
about the early Olympics in Greece.
Women weren't allowed to be there! They
finally started in 1900, but only in tennis.
They've had fun with the ICON computers
that are visiting their school. They have
tried lots of new learning and drawing pro-
grams! Mark Weir is their Special Me this
week.
COMPUTE WITH ICONS
Compute With Icons
Brookside is fortunate enough to have
ICON computers for 3 weeks and has col-
lected sbme comments from a few Grade 5
students. Robbie Ohm thinks they are
"totally radical." Josh Foster commented
they are "totally macho." Blair Bieman
thinks that they are "smart." Amanda
Todd commented that they are "fun."
Michelle MacGillvray also thinks they are
"fun and exciting." "They are cool and
awesome" was Eric Andrew's response.
