HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-02-03, Page 8Page 8 —Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, February 3, 1988 Novices take perfect record into the playoffs Lucknow Novice The Clifford Novice team was in Lucknow for a game on January 16 and while the Clifford players seemed to play well in their own right, the bigger, more seasoned Lucknow boys handed out an 8 - 0 thumping. The goaltending in this game was left solely to Curt Humphrey while Graeme Hunter experienced a game "playing out". Goals for Lucknow came from the sticks of Stuart Rintoul, Kevin Rintoul, Trevor Moffat for two, Michael Puddy for a pair, Ian Paolin and Ben Brophy. Assist points. went to Micheal Puddy with three, Ian Paolin with two and Trevor Moffat and Jay Humphrey with a single each. The shut -out was earned by Curt Hum- phrey between the pipes. The game was noticably penalty -free and both teams may now enter the Esso Penalty Free promotion again. Lucknow defeats Belmore The Lucknow Novice team travelled to Belmore on January 18 and came home witha win after an exciting contest. Graeme Hunter was the lone goalie for Lucknow as Curt Humphrey was ill. Belmore's Jason Metcalf came out strong early in the first period to score his team's firts marker but less than two minutes later, Lucknow's Ian Paolin scored from Michael Puddy to tie the game in the early going. Metcalf answered back for Belmore to again put his team up by one as the first period came to a close. . Puddy was the lone marksman during the second period and the scene was set for an exciting 'third period of play as the score was once again tied. Lucknow realized that they had to play their positions or this Belmore team would take the lead for good. A close, well played Two left for Lancers The Lucknow Lancers travelled to Ripley last Friday for their final meeting with the Roosters and came home with a 6 - 6 tie. Ripley jumped out to a 2 - 0 ,lead with goals from Paul Wilkins and Kevin Stewart, but the Lancers bounced back to tie the score on goals by Grant Gilchrist and Art Clark. ' The teams traded goals in the second, as Stewart again scored and Steve Simpson tallied one for the Lancers. Both teams were flying in the third and when the final buzzer sounded it was Ripley 6, Lucknow 6. Steve ALton, Steve Simpson and the ever dangerous Pat Murray scored for the Lancers, while Mark Stanley, Kevin Stewart and Kent Lowry did the damage .for the Roosters. Teeswater 6, Lucknow 5 Sunday in Lucknow. the Lancers got off to a slow start as Teeswater built up a six goal lead in the first half of the game. Steve Alton finally got the ball rolling in the latter part of the second and Allan Eadie and Grant Gilchrist cut the lead in half after two periods of play. Pat Murray made it 6 - 4 midway through the third and Allan Eadie brought the Lancers to within one in the final . minute as the Lancers were playing with six attackers. The Lancers failed to score again as the visitors held on for a 6 - 5 win. The Lancers have two games left on the schedule as they travel to Lion's Head Fri- day and host Lion's Head in Lucknow the following Friday. third period produced some exciting hockey for the fans. Five minutes into the period, Colin Becker scored' from Brent Cameron and Ian Paolin to put Lucknow up by one and they never looked back. Luke Sproul came up with the insurance goal with nine minutes remaining on the clock. Paolin took the assist. The Lucknow team was able to hold onto their lead and took home the win after a great game for both the players and the fans. It is evident the Belmore team has improved their play considerably since last season. The Lucknow Novice team hosted Ripley in an afternoon contest on January 23, Curt Humphrey handled the net minding duties for Lucknow and made some key saves in the game which saw the home team come out winners. The game saw Ripley put on a good display of hockey skills but run out of steam in the later half of the afternoon. Lucknow was able to monoplize the scor- ing in the first peroid. Scoring for Lucknow was Ian Paolin from Michael Puddy; Pud- dy assisted by Lee Drennan; and Colin Becker unassisted. This gave Lucknow a three goal lead to take to the dressing room. In the second period, Ripley's Darrin Bolton netted one with help from his linemates and Glen Ferguson bulged the mesh on a fine rushing play unassisted. Darren MacDonald responded for Lucknow with assists to Darren Boron and Paul Lowry while Glenn Ferguson scored on a pass from Jeff Porter to close the se- cond period with Lucknow up 5 - 2. Lucknow again dominated the third period of play. Scoring points were earned by Drennan from Puddy, Puddy from Drennan and Becker from Puddy. The Lucknow boys found the Ripley Novices much improved over their last meeting. Watch for the Lucknow team to take part in the upcoming Blyth tournament .in February and in the Zurich tourney in March. Last of the season The Novice team hosted the Wingham Nuggets last weekend for the final game of the regular season. The duo of Humphrey and Hunter dressed to share the net min- ding duties. Lucknow played a very strong game both defensively and offensively and in do- ing so, dominated the contest. During the first period, the local boys constantly peppered the Nuggets goalie with shots but came away with only a single marker. Trevor Moffat took that one from Jeff Porter and Brent Cameron. Lone scorers during the second period were Porter unassisted and Michael Pud- dy also unassisted. At the end of two, Lucknow lead 3 - 0. Lucknow added four more goals in the final period. Porter scored from Moffat; Ben Brophy capitalized on a pass from Porter and Cameron; Ian Paolin netted one from Puddy and Moffat added his se- cond on the night from Cameron and Ferguson. Hunter and Humphrey shared the shut- out and the Lucknow defense did a great job keeping the puck out of their own zone. Offensively, Lucknow was able to give the Nuggets' goalie a good test with numerous chances -to score. " Next week, the Lucknow Novices head into the play-offs with an excellent no -loss road record.
