In fact, the black shirt team has been the black sheep of Lucknow Minor Hockey and there have been little to report for the local press. However, when a group of young men does something right, when they give all they have, when they play with pride, they deserve recognition. Specifically, reference is being made to the Ripley Lions Midget Tournament held this past weekend. If you think only of trophies, the team played three games and came up empty, but, the boost to their reputation is what really counted. In the first contest of the tourney, the boys slept through the first period of play allowing three goals and scoring none. It appeared to be the start of an embarrass- ing day, but between periods the team pull- ed together. They played even in the se- cond frame and won the third, finishing the game with a respectable 4 - 2 loss against the tournament champions, Lucan. In their second, game, the Lucknow Midgets picked up where they left off and skated to a well deserved 4 - 1 win against Mildmay. This set up a shot at the consola- tion title against Belmore, or Belwater as it is commonly called, In the third game of the weekend, there was pride on the line. The easy route is to give it a good shot, say it has been a good P day and take what corr It +'ikes character to dig deep and cu,,. the most spirited performance of season on rubbery legs while shooting a puck that seems to weigh- pounds instead of ounces. In a scoring sense, the contest started slowly° Belmore scratched out the first goal but Lucknow rebounded to tie it up. Rather than fold.under the pressure, late in the second Lucknow took a 2 -1 lead and with some momentum going for them, they could have had a couple more pucks in as two break -away attempts just failed to click., After good action at both ends of the rink, Belmore counted on two scoring drives about four minutes apart mid -way through the third period. Late in the game, Lucknow pulled out all the stops and press- ed with everything they had but still came up short. Even with six attackers for the final minute, the goal was not to be. Belmore won the game. Lucknow won a new measure of respect. The Lucknow Midgets are Michael Aren- burg, Kent Campbell, Kevin deJong, Butch Foran, Scott Gibson, Jeff Gammie, Craig Irwin, Harvey Kikkert, Marcial LeBreton, Kirk Livingston, David McDougall, Charles Murray, Sam Mur- ray, Jonathon Nelson, Jeff Pollard and David Schuler. When you see any of these young men, conmgratulate them on a job well done. A job done with pride.
