The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-02-03, Page 5Against Sunday Shopping Dear Editor: I would like to congratulate the Wingham Business Association on their unanimous decision against Sunday Shop- ping. It was very important and urgent that we at the grass roots notify our M.P..P. as well as Premier David Pe,, r - son of our stand on this issue. Since attending the organizational meeting of the Coalition Against Open Sun- day Shopping (CAOSS or pronounced chaos) I have some facts I would like to share with everyone. Support was evident from all major church denominations, many Business Associations; retail and wholesale association; trade unions; large com., panies such as Towers, Loblaws, Sears, Home Hardwares and small businesses as well. There is'also support for this from the Conservative and N.D.P. M.P.P.'s as well as some prominent Liberal M.P.P.'s. David Peterson's poll , 1987 showed that 71% of those polleu want a uniform law across Ontario. Some facts about open Sunday Shopping are: 1. It will be less convenient because stores will Close earlier in the evenings so they can remain open on Sundays. Some people will HAVE to shop 'on Sundays. whether they want to or not. 2. Sunday shopping will mean a price in- crease of up to 15% to cover extra costs of labour, overhead and depreciation. 3. Sunday shopping means no common pause day for thousands of families and the destruction of their quality of life. 4. The ripple effect of Sunday Shopping will impact on 1/3 of the entire work force, such as Police, Public Transportation, Ser- vice industries, Day Care Centres and Teachers. 5. Full-time staff will be reduced in favour of part-timers who are paid less and require fewer benefits. Ask yourself these questions: Are you or the members of your family prepared to work on Sundays or Holidays? Would you support Sunday Shopping if it meant 1/3 of the workforce had to work? Would you support Sunday Shopping if prices increased up to 15%? The CAOSS needs the support of all local Business Associations and local organiza- tions interested in this effort. I can provide your organization or Business Association with a form to register with the CAOSS. They need to know by Feb. 18, 1988. I. would like to urge everyone to write to their M.P.P., Premier David Peterson, Solicitor General Joan Smith or Attorney General Ian Scott, all at Queen's Park, Toronto, Ont. (no stamp necessary) asking them to reconsider their intention of pass- ing this decision on to the local municipalities. This is one way to support the quality of life we desire in our communities. • Mrs. Muriel Coultes RR 5, Brussels Ont. NOG 1110 357-1908 To The Editor: A Denture Therapist is the generally unknown, new professional member of the dental team. He or she, licensed by the Government of Ontario since 1974, will make and fit the new dentures, and reline or repair existing ones directly to the public. From 1971 to 1974 we were known as Denturists. Since the chairside, and the laboratory procedures are done on the premises by the Denture Therapist, the obvious savings are passed on to the public. Furthermore, a much faster service is available, especially for repair, reline and other emergency. It is important to have your dentures ex- amined regularly. Your mouth is one of the most important parts of your body, but often the most neglected, when dentures are worn. The lack of public information regarding dentures is alarming and often leads to problems as well as unnecessary expense. Most people keep their dentures too long. We, stress to all our patients that den- tures are not meant to last indefinitely. The denture teeth or base will wear or stain, The tissues, gums and bones of the mouth are constantly undergoing changes so that the dentures will need to be ad- justed, rebased or remade from time to time. The length of time will vary and will depend on such factors as individual TO tolerances, habits and length of time you were without teeth before the dentures were inserted. Although some people will wear their dentures for 15 to 20 years, the average life of a denture is only about 6 to 9 years and they should be relined every 3 to 5 years. Your Denture Therapist is the best one to advise you when your dentures have outlived their usefulness. Also bi-annual examinations can help you avoid serious problems. If you have problems with your present dentures, or think of getting new ones, call one of the offices listed under Denture Therapist in the Yellow. Pages Telephone Directory. Consultations are usually free and there is no obligation. The Health Professional Legislation Review Committee has on its agenda to discuss, access and make recommenda- tions to the Minister of Health for approval that Denturists (Denture Therapist) be • allowed to make Partial Denture direct to the public without the Dentist as a middleman. I am now asking for your support. Write to your local member of Parliament (M.P.P.) let him know who you are and how' long you have had your Partial Den- ture, and who made them, what kind -of partial you had previously and why you had to get new ones, and follow up with a phone call or talk to him or her personally. Please send a copy of your letter and any response to Horst Feige at the address stated below. Denturists seek your help to get legislative change, so Denturists (Denture Therapist) may legally make Partial Den- tures direct to the public without the Den- tist participation. I would estimate 85% of all practicing Denturists in Ontario make partial den- tures. Partials that are now classed as it legal. Out of those 85% there may be 3% that make them legally in the office of a Dentist, but the Dentist is usually doing his own thing in another part of the building.. The only time the Dentist has anything to do with the partial denture patient is when it comes time to count the money or sign the Insurance Papers. . The only • legal way a Denturist may make a Partial Denture or repair a partial denture for a patient is if the Dentist stands beside him/her and supervises the whole procedure. In most instances ( I believe) the Denturist would be supervis- ing the Dentist. Some of the Denturists have spent 2/3 of their adult lifetime acquiring their skills in partial denture fabrication. I know most, Denturists pan out -shine, out -perform a Dentist when it comes to making and fit- ting Dentures or a Partial Denture directly for a patient. As far as I know the Dentist is not re- quired through his whole University schooling to .make even one single Partial Denture. He is required to go through the process of making a single Full Upper and Lower Denture but not a Partial Denture. Now you can't learn to make dentures by making one denture or reading up on how to make dentures in a book. The Dentist relies on the skill and exper- tise of the Dental Laboratory Technician to make the Denture for him, when he graduates from Dental University. There are three provinces in Canada that allow Denturists to make Partial Den- tures direct to the public legally (without Dentists participation ). , We have been campaigning for almost 17 years to get legislative change so that we may make partial dentures legally direct to the public. Will you please help Denture Therapists ( Denturists) by writing, phoning and talk- ing to your local M.P.P. and the Minister of Health. Please don't forget to send us a copy of your letter and any response that you may get from your M.P.P. Phone or send a copy or response to: Horst Feige, D.T., 58 West St., Goderich, Ont.
