The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-01-27, Page 13Our broomballers tops
Two local teams took top honours at the
broomball tournament sponsored by the
Blyth Broomball League over the
weekend.
In the Ladies' Division, the Lucknow
Lazers captured the 'A' Championship by
defeating the Blyth Baintoneers 2 - 0 in the
first game; the Mildmay Jets 3 - 2 in a
close overtime contest and in the final
championship game held Sunday,
Lucknow defeated last year's regional
champs, Waterloo by a score of 1 - 0. Don-
na Alton scored the only goal in the final
game and was named Most Valuable
Player in the tourney.
Coach of the ladies' team, Steve
Chamney, reported that the ladies played
excellent broomball all weekend and were
deserving of the championship win.
In the four division men's side of the
event, the Lanesville Lords emerged at the
'AA' champs. They defeated the Hangover
Hawks 3 - 2 in their first game and advanc-
ed to the finals by downing the Cargill
Rookies 1 - 0.
In the exciting' final, the Lords defeated
the Glammis Flyers 1 - 0. The Flyers are
reportedly a very elite team with some
top-notch players and the Lords should be
quite proud of their win.
Ken Mewhinney scored the unassisted
goal in the final and took home the MVP
for his efforts.
The teams send their thanks to all the
local fans who came out to support the
tournament.
Lancers settle for a tie
Lucknow Intermediates
The Lucknow Lancers played just one
game over the weekend as they travelled
to Teeswater and came home with a single
point in a 1 - 4 tie,
The two teams played to a scoreless tie
in the first' period as it seemed the puck
was bouncing everywhere except into the
net.
Come the second period, the Lancers
took an early lead on a fine goal by Allan
Eadie. Teeswater countered to get that one
back and added two more to take a 3 - 1
lead.
Down, by two, the Lancers regrouped
and stormed back to take a 4 - 3 lead into
the dressing room as Steve Simpson and
Grant Gilchrist found the mark. Gilchrist
netted two goals in the flurry..
Teeswater scored the only goal of the
third period and the Lancers settled for the
tie in a hard fought contest.
Corning up this week, the Lancers travel
to Ripley for a Friday night game and will
get a rematch with Teeswater in a game
played here on Sunday starting at 7:30
p.m.
