HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-01-27, Page 7Maitland Presbyterial hold annual meeting The annual meeting of W.M.S. groups of Maitland Presbyterial was held on Jan. 18 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Wingham. Mrs.' Evan Keith, South Kinloss, president conductd the meeting with Mrs. Harry Batemen, Wingham pianist. Mrs. Lorna Stuart, Wingham Evening welcomed the ladies to St..lndrew's. Mrs. Glen Haldenby, Kinlough read the minutes. Roll call was answered by 56 members. Correspondence was read by Mrs. Ewan MacLean, Ashfield, and included informa- tion from Crieff Hills, Banners for 75th An- niversary at London in 1989, and that Miss Eleanor Knott of India was returning to Canada for health reasons. Mrs. Tom MacDonald, Kinlough, read information of a Second Mile Project to assist with needs in Guyana. It was decid- ed to collect Sunday School papers to be taken to Synodical at Windsor in April by Mrs. Robert Arbuckle, Wingham, and each Auxiliary is to also help financially with shipping charges to Guyana. Mrs. Harry Bateman, Wingham, gave the treasurer's report. The Supply Fund will no longer be a separate fund but will be included in the Objective with the General Fund. The New Purpose was repeated in unison. Mrs. Glen Haldenby, a delegate to Ladies' Camp last June, gave an en- thusiastic report. Rev. John Vaudry of St. Andrew's brought greetings from Presbytery. The meeting adjourned for lunch with Grace by Rev. Vaudry. Lunch was served by the Ladies' Auxiliary. The afternoon session began with a film "Sights and Sounds of the churches of U.S.S.R." shown by Mrs. Arbuckle who can loan it to any Auxiliary, • Mrs. Keith constituted this session with prayer. Devotions on the theme "Walking with the Master" were conducted by Ashfield W.M.S. with Mrs. Warren Wylds reading the Scripture. Mrs. Chas. Wilkins gave the meditation with thoughts of the New Year being an opportunity to renew our lives, and be guided by His love. She said, "Faith in Christ is essential, we need love and compassion to, know Christ." Prayer followed by Mrs. McLean. The offering was received by Mrs. Ar- buckle and Mrs. Ken Leitch with dedica- tion by Mrs. Leonard. Clarke (South Kinloss). Reports of the various secretaries were considered and adopted. Mrs. Robert Bregman gave a report of Congregational Life meetings. The Presbyterial will sponsor a child to Camp Kintail with Bluevale W.M.S. to choose one. Mrs. Keith who was a delegate to Coun- cil and Congress at Winnipeg last May, gave a very interesting report of those meetings. Mrs. Wm. McCreath, Ripley had a display of books. These will go to each Auxiliary when any can be ordered. Mrs. Ted English, Wingham, installed the officers for 1988. Mrs. Joe Boron, Kin- cardine, gave the courtesies. After the closing hymn, Mrs. Janet Inglis Belmore closed the meeting with prayer. Afternoon attendance ws 68. Refreshments were served by Mrs. An- nie Conn and Mrs. Gertie Tiffin, Wingham. A brief executive meeting followed when new members were introduced and welcomed. McCreath, Ripley; Friendship and Service - Mrs. Clarence Gibson, Molesworth; Glad Tidings - Mrs. Howard Baker, Molesworth; Publicity - Mrs. Gor- don Wall, Wingham. Nominating Committee - Ripley Afternoon, South Kinloss, Teeswater, Wingham Aft. Executive Member - Cor- responding Sec. St. Andrew's UCW St. Andrew's U.C.W. Ripley held the general meeting for' the new year on Jan. 12 at the United Church. The leader for Unit I, Eileen Carter welcomed everyone, and opened the meeting by reading poems entitled "United Church Women" and "Friends Being Memories". Mary Worthington and Mrs. Wm. Bogues conducted the worship with scripture and readings on "Vision for 1988" and a "Sense of Vision". The hyrnn "Be Thou My Vision" was sung with Marilyn Johnston at the piano. The offering was received by Sheila MacDonald and Joyce Mcpherson and dedicated by Mary Worthington. Past President Sheila MacDonald ex- pressed thanks to the Unit One ladies, and then declared all the executive offices va- cant. As there were no further nominations, Muriel Osborne read the new slate of offices for 1988 - 89. Rev. Glen Mcpherson then con- ducted the installation of the new executive. The new president Shirley Harris extend- ed her thanks to the past executive members and the hymn "Standing At the Portal" was sung followed by the business part of the meeting. The roll call was taken with twenty-five members present. The minutes of the Thanksgiving General meeting, and December executive meeting were read and approved. The treasurer report was given by Barb Liddle. It was announced that there are some "1988 Church Calendars" still available if anyone wishes to buy one. Sheila MacDonald introduced the study for 1988. "Creation In Crisis" special edition of the Mandate. A film strip entitled "Fami- ly Farms are Linked to the Land" was view- ed. A comparison of rural life in Canada and Africa involving a Canadian farmer and an African lady who was the main producer of her family farm. The film also stressed, "stand by your rural neighbour". The meeting was closed by repeating the U.C.W. Benediction led ay Mrs. Harris. Lucknow UCS Unit Two The first meeting of the year for Unit Two of the Lucknow UCW was held in the church parlour after the service on Sun- day, January 17. A lovelylunch was served by Mrs. Rit- chie, Mrs. Grace Campbell and Mrs. Tillbrook. Mrs. McFarlane read Proverbs 16, Verse 1- 4, and a poem, "A Thought for the Beginning of the New Year". The group spent most of the meeting preparing the programme and electing of- ficers for the coming year. Mrs. McFarlane and Mrs. Hackett presided over the election of officers. There were 12 members and one vistor in attendance an dues were collected. The meeting closed with a prayer from Mrs. McFarlane.
