1 Olympic
By Nathan Daer
and Teresa Jefferson
The Dinosaur Den Treehouse had fun
this week with Middle Monday. We used
our middle names all day. Our new them
is the 1988 Winter Olympics. We're learn-
ing about the Olympic symbols, how .the
Olympics began, and what sports we
might see. We have lots of clippings about
the torch in our news corner. We also had
fun tracing life-sized pictures of our
Kindergarten buddies in Mrs. Paolin's
room. William King is our 'Special Me'.
Grade 4, P2, is doing New Year's Resolu-
tions for. cartoon characters. Here are
some of their efforts: Andy Capp - I will
get a hat that fits; Lucy - When I play
baseball with Charlie Brown, I will catch
the ball; Dennis the Menace - I will try to
be nice to Margaret; Mr. Lodge - I will
never let Veronica go out with Archie
again; Dennis the Menace - I will use hair
spray to control my cow lick; and, Gar-
field - I will eat lasagna only four times a
week.
Mrs. Worsell's Grade 5 class has been
working in the Library with Mrs. Blake
learning how toause the dictionary. They
are also beginning an independent study
on domestic animals.
For- the past two weeks, Grade 5-6, P3,
has been studying Ancient Greece and the
Olympics. They have also been working
on the computers and doing different pro-
grams and games. It has been an exciting
two weeks.
Mrs. Tebbutt's Grade 6 class is involved
in the VIP program. VIP stands for
Values, Influences and Peers or Very Im-
portant Person. Constable Marshall is our

about authority. Constable Marshall talks
about drugs, vandalism, peer pressor;
values and shoplifting. This will be an in-
teresting program.
Grade 7A is going to be starting a visual
novel called Spirit Bay. They have com-
pleted Indians in history and now will con-
tinue with a study of New France. As soon
as there is enough snow, they are going to
go to East Wawanosh for a snow shoe shuf-
fle. In gym class they started gymnastics.
The Room 6 Readers made an Epiphany
bean cake on Friday. It didn't turn out as
they thought it would. 'Mr. Farnell put the
wrong sesame seeds in the mixing bowl.
Luke remembered to add the milk at the
last minute but we forgot to add the eggs.
They found the eggs after the cake was in
the oven. They could have used a chain-
saw to cut the cake. .The cake was as hard
and dry as a rock. They hope to do better
next time.
The grade 7 and 8s have started a new
motivational system in Miss Knetch's
class. This system is to. encourage good
behaviour, better work habits and better
French oral comprehension. The new
system. involves each student receiving
$1,000 in French francs and earning or los-
ing money based on an agreement made
with the teacher. Every so often, they hold
an auction sale in French so that students
may earn or spend money. This "trial"
system will run for the winter term.

Conor McDonagh, a Grade One student at the Lucknow Central Public School, is
shown above receiving a gold medal from Mrs. Nancy MacLennan, District Manager
for Worldbook Childcraft Canada. Conor read the most storybooks in a competition to
raise funds which allowed the school to place a set of Worldbook Encyclopedia in each
class. Way to go, Conor.
Below, Mrs. Katherine Campbell, a Grade Two -Three teacher at the Lucknow
Public School, is shown receiving a copy of the Worldbook Encycolpedia of Science
from Mrs. MacLennan. Mrs. Campbell's class read the most books in the competition
