HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-01-20, Page 7_ormer Warden speaks The agriculture meeting of the Whitechurch Women's Institute was held on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at the home of Mrs. Jas Wilson in Wingham. President Helen Currie opened with the poem, "Remember the Farm". The speaker was Brian McBurney, former Warden of Huron Coun- ty, and at present the Reeve of Turnberry Township. Mrs. Jas. Wilson introduced Brian and had as his topic a video of Huron County which Was narrated by Murray -Gaunt with pictures of Hensall Seaforth, Central Huron farmland, town, of Wingham, Goderich airport, Champion Road Machinery andmany other towns and scenes from Huron County. He said the capital farm value in Huron County is approx. 1 million dollars and is second to no other county in farm production with a population of 56,000 people. He said in dos- ing we celebrate our good fortune with fairs and festivals. This video is available from the Huron County Planning Dept. in Goderich by contacting Gary Davidson at 524-2188. Mrs. Elgin Johnston thanked Brian for his splendid presentation which was enjoyed by all and presented him with an envelope. WHITECHURCH By Joon Ross The 60th anniversary of the W.I. was discussed and will be held Feb. 28, 1988. A committee of Mrs. Jean McGuire, Mrs. Agnes Farrier and Merle Wilson were named to plan for this occasion. The roll call was answered by naming a childhood chore. Readings by Mrs. Jas Wilson, Mrs. Jean McGuire were given. , Merle Wilson gave a contest which was won by Helen Currie. Grace was sung and Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Elgin Johnston and Mrs. Helen Currie served a lunch. Mrs. Agnes Farrier returned home last week after spending the Christmas holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Farrier and family of Guelph and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Davis and family of La Salle. Mr. and Mrs. John Schreeringa and baby daughter of Brampton visited on Sun- day with Mr. and Mrs. Archie Purdon. Dorothy Coultes, Director of Family and Children's Services, was on hand last week to accept a cheque for $120 from the Junior Farmers. The money donated by the local group went to help fund the annual Christmas Bureau which saw to itthat 600 children in this area had a merry Christmas. That's Junior Farmer President Audrey Ritchie in the centre happily handing over the cash while Junior Farmer member Ralph Mor- rison looks on.
