as Girl Guides look on
With a group of Girl Guides hoping to
achieve their Citizenship Badges looking
on, the Lucknow Village Council held their
regular January meeting on Tuesday
evening of last week. The Reeve and all
councilors were in attendance.
The interim mill rate of 24.5 was set by
Council at this meeting. This rate is slight-
ly less than 50 percent of last year's total
mill rate as is dictated by the Municipal
Act.
Council also appointed, or rather re-
appointed, their representatives to the
Bruce County Library Advisory Board as
well. Bernice Johnstone and Lorna Guay
will once again sit on the advisory council.
' In other appointments made Tuesday,
Ab Murray will represent the Village on
the Bruce County Advisory Board with
Reeve Herb Clark as the alternative.
Council heard a letter from Village
Engineer Steve Burns to Ed Sexsmith of
the Ministry of the Environment. The let-
ter enclosed a draft agreement which calls
for the Village of Lucknow to provide a
replacement water supply for the
residents of Kinloss in the area of the pro-
posed treatment site should the treatment
plant contaminate wells there.
Council felt the agreement should be
more specific than simply "a suitable
alternate water supply" as the draft
agreement reads at present but decided to
wait until the views of the M.O.E. and the
Village Solicitor, George Brophy, are
heard. Mr. Brophy has now been advised
of this situation.
The Ministry of Transportation and
Communications advised Council that the
1988 subsidy allocation for the Village will

be $75,300. That figure represents the max-
imum amount of 50 percent budgeted.
In other business at the meeting, Council
gave approval to the Celebrate in '88 com-
mittee to hold its reunion on June 30, July
1, 2 and 3 this summer. Council also re-
quested that a representative of this com-
mittee attend the next regular council
meeting to discuss the garbage pick-up
costs that will, no doubt, be incurred.
In a similiar move, Council approved the
Kinsmen Summerfest to be held June 17,
18 and.19 this year.
A letter from the Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority stating that the pro-
posed construction of a permanent fence
around the ball park would not be granted
was also received by Council. The letter
stated that such a fence would extend into
the floodway and that only a temporary
fence would be considered.
The Lucknow Recreation Department,
through the Village Council,is at this time
making applications for a one-third grant
to install a replacement pool liner for the
Lucknow Pool. Rec. Director, Bill Hunter,
says the new liner could cost as much as
$7,400 and adds that the present liner is the
oldest in captivity as it has been in place
since the pool was built in 1973. Most liners
last no more than ten years, added Mr.
Hunter.
