Funds raised go for ongoing research into new and better ways to con- trol and hopefully find a cure for diabetes. Diabetes develops when the pancreas fail to produce enough effective insulin for the body to convert food to energy. It af- fects more than one million Canadians. Its complications - blindness, kidney disease, gangrene, heart disease and stroke - make it the third leading cause of death. Today scientists are investigating new methods . of treating the insulin dependent diabetic. One of the most promising in- volves the now successful transplanting of microencapsulated islet -cells between rats and rats and mice but much research is needed to develop treatment safe enough for use in humans. Recent research in diabetic rats indicates that vanadyl might possibly work as well as insulin does to reduce blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Vanadyl could be taken by mouth so it would be "no more insulin - goodbye needles" in the not too distant future, we hope! I would like to thank the following volunteer canvassers who went door to TO door in Ashfield and parts of Colborne Township: Fran Elphick, Grant Farrish, Betty Anne Elphick, Cathy Cook, Lorne MacDonald, Isabel Hunter, Bell Hackett, Susanne Andrew, Sherry Alton, Delores VanOsch, Elizabeth Irvin, Donna Alton, Teresa Courtney, Lynda Curran, Loretta Doherty, Marian Austin, Sue Brown, Ger- da Burgsma, Ilene Sillib, Nancy Fitz- patrick; Port Albert - Bessie Bellinger, Merle G.
