Without 'them, you too could be taken away in the night or in broad daylight And tortured or even killed - a daily occurrence la many countries :of the. world. Fifty years ago, on December 14, world leaders signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These goals and ideals were to promote a world in which all could live a .decent in which: they are cherished and treated fairly. On Dec, W, a book with millions of signatures will be presented to the United Nations Secretary General, Kafi Annan. Members of Amnesty International around the world have collected these signatures.. Is your name there to show you care? Recently, 'United 'Church Women. heard Nora Lopez speak in. Mildmay. Nora, a widow with five children, now working in Hamilton, suffered persecu- tion in Honduras. "My husband, Eduardo, .a journalist and human rights: worker, was taken away by the security forces on Christmas Eve, 1984. He Was tortured for several days, then killed and dumped some- where," she said, Why should we care about human rights? Because they can very easily be eliminated by the government or the mili- tary in a country. Only vigilance by ail of us will ensure that Canada remains one of the safest countries in the world', As Nora Lopez says, "Human Rights are everybody's business, Violations occur everywhere in the world, including Canada. However, the kind of human; rights abuses happeningat this very' moment in other countries is sometimes unbelievable to Canadians. We must not wait for something to happen •to us or to someone dose to us to respond• ay get- ting involved, Canadians send a' strong message that itis wrong to violate human. rights. If we are aware of the atrocities around the world ,end choose to.remain silent, we become accomplices to those violations." ' Take time to 'light a candle this week and remember the freedom and' rights that we have in Canada.
