Br.i ir Catholic board
Pilot project gives three principals
more say on schooi-based team9
by aat }Halpin
A pilot .project involving three schools in the ruce-
Grey Catholic board will give principals the chance to
interview and hire teacIers for their schools.
Board human resources.director, iirn Sheppard saki the
new system gives principals more say about who's on
their school-based team.
"1 think it reflects two things, the fact that there are
fewer resources la the board level, and the new roe of
principals as on-site (school.) managers," Sheppard said
about the change in policy.
'Sheppard said principals will have "differe=nt sornfort
levels" with their new role, but his department is pre-
pared to train principals in .interview techniques and
monitor the pilot project. A half-day workshop has been
scheduled for October 21.
Until now, senior administration hired all teachers and
assigned them to schools as needed. Trustee Christine
Zettel saki the new policy "will he a totally 4diffcrent
thing" as principals hire specit'ically for their own
schools. The new policy allows principals to; make ver-
bal offers of employment, subject to board approval.
Sheppard noted that under the old policy, some princi-
pals were involved with selecting long-term supply
•
teachers.
"We're. hoping to build onthat experience," he told
trustees. ".It's a t:haange, but I think it's .a, change the prin-
cipals will welcome."
Sheppard said a similar policy worked well when he.
was with the Brant Board of Education. The pilot pro-
ject will run at Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton,
St. .Anthony's elementary in Kincardine and at
Immaculate Conception school.,
