Fire departinent
.needs new 4ew pagers
by Pat tllvingstun
There was na official committee report from the tire
beard rep when Lucknow village council met. Last week,
however, a small discussion did take place about the
need to replace the firefighters' pagers.
Fire Chief Peter Steer told :the Sentinel later in the
week that the pagers are about 18 .years old. "Virtually
• they are not working properly and it does take a lot of
dollars for maintenance to keep them going.:: Batteries
are very expensive and, this runs into a lot of money
too."
Steer said they are •getting by with the pagers, but cer-
tainly now with 9-1-1" in effect, new ones would be
advantageous."It isimperative for good•response time."
With the 9-1-1 emergency system, the firefighters are
alerted to ai.call through their pagers. The fixe whistle is
only activated at the fire hall when and if more firelight.;
ers are needed. . •
The cost of 20 new pagerswould•run around $12,000.
Steer said the department works with a limited budget
and the pagers: would•have to be a capital expeitse;
• Even with the• amalgamation of Luckhow With'
Kinloss and 'Huron Townships, the pagers are still a
necessity:
Reeve Stuart Reavie said that both the Lticknow and
Ripley fire chiefs have met•with the transition board and
have discussed things. It is basically felt that' they will •••
still be the Lucknow. and Ripley departmentseven.
though' they are within one municipality. "'The need for
new pagers: by the Luck -now department is still there
even when we are amalgamated," Reavie said.:
