CAA Central Ontario
offers this quick refresher
course on safe driving in
school zones.
Take a child's small
size andquick move-
' tents, add some:,eommop
obstacles of bushes or
parked cars, mix in a dis-
tracted driver, and you've
got a recipe for disaster.
Driving where children
walk, bicycle .and get in
and out of .buses or cars
requires the same skills as
being a good student. You
have to pay attention.
•Lesson #1: Learn to be

what's coating up on, the
road, but also- watch for
"invisible"' Jlods by using a
technique called': "ground
viewing." Keep your eyes
searching low, 'around
wheels. .and between
parked • vehicles, looking
for little feet, bike wheels,
toys, moving shadows or
pets paws, It could be the:
only warning you get.
before child dashes into
your path.
Take time as well to'
scan from side to, side.
Safety experts recommend
you alternate your ground
viewing with a 20 • to 30.
second: • scan down the
road. This means looking
ahead up to two city
blocks. In school zones,.
take even more care than
usual to check both sides
of the road at intersections
and crosswalks, and near
school entrances. '
Lesson #2: Slow down:
It's not the law in school.
zones for most areas; but it
is the safest way to give
yourself time to react. You
may be in a hurry to get to
work, .but so are many
kids, eager to beat the bell.
Driving a bit slower in
school zones may not save
tithe, but it could save
life.
Lesson #3, Don't ignore
the Obvious: When travel-
ling on a route you drive
Qevery.• day, it's'easy to let
your mind drift away frown
what's on the road. But the
return of school days
means you can't indulge in
