At speeds of 30 miles an
hour, it's the rush that
makes Kevin Green jump
off the back of a moving
horse onto a 550 pound

the animal to the ground,
"It's just an adrenaline
rush," said Green of RR f,

place a cowboy out of the
money for that weekend:
The competition, .is
tough and while Green
works' to stay in the top he
knows it can't always be
that way,
"I can .win ,rodeos.
There's 30 other guys out
there who can humble you
just as quick," he said.
But winning each: rodeo
isn't•what's necessary. •
That's his strategy; to
stayin the top six or seven
where he cansecure him-
self a win'in the Dodge
Rodeo Series: finals and
tater, a place at the Ontario-
Rodeo
ntarioRodeo Association. Finals. .
Riders at Lucknow are
'competing for points in
the Dodge series and to be
in the top seven after the
final weekend of regular
rodeo action in September.
Those in tho top seven
go on to compete in the
finals, where Green has
had some experience.

even if it's. going to 'take

determined to lay that
steer down each time. '
When you weigh 175
• pounds and try to throw
down a .snore than 500
pound- steer; Green said,
split seeond• timing is a: big
:pant of the event, •
And it takes much -More
than just brute{ strength, •
The steer,is given 4
short, head start; and is fol-,
loved into the arena by
the wrestler and his hazer,
a partner on horseback
who tries to guide that
steer in a straight line.
Speeds can reach ;about
30 noises an. hour as the
wrestler* in Meer seconds,
gains on the steer,
Green said when he
comes along side the hip
of the steer, he sl:tdes
down in the saddle; par-
tially off his horse,
"That's called getting in
the pocket," he said.
By then, he's at about.
the middle of the steer,
drops the reigns and; hold-
ing on to the saddle by the .
horn with one hand, he
reaches around the steer
with his free arm,
Again, allof this in a
matter of seconds at about
30 miles ani hour.
Lettinggo of the saddle
horn, he grabs the. steer's
horns while his feet are
still in the saddle's s.tir-
rups.
As the horse goes by the
steer, his feet come down
in front of the animal:

'lust like you're going to
put the horn in your pock-.
et, That's called 'shaping

coming. ;off the horse and
turning the steer's head, in
,,,14 good situations: the steer

on its side with: all four
legs in sight 9f theejudge.
That's when the timer
stops and the cowboy -
hopes only four seconds'
have gone by to place him..
in or close to the top for
some money and ,'points
that day.

Greer said. .
It also takes a. good
horse hazer:
Green said: a' steer.

wrestler is nothing, without.
a good horse and hazer.
Usually hazing for
Green is either Mac
Anderson or Dwayne
}lodgins (better known as
Duey in the rodeo circuit),,
Hodgins is the reigning
-steer wrestling champion.
Green's •own horse,
Roaney,-is used for team
roping, the second event in
which he competes.
For steer wrestling, Vern
Steiifier, also from the
Wingham area, went out •
-
west to buy a steer
wrestling :horse,. which: he
and Greeen•have shared.
They both 'reached the.
finals last year where they
had to steer wrestle three
times each. -
"We threw all six of our
steers on the ground at the
finals," said Greens.
He finished in third
*lace for the season. mark-
ing a successful comeback
after a. knee injury the year
before. -
Green, .who grew up
with horses,, was first
introduced to the rodeo
sports through .. Mac:
Anderson, a close family
friend, who got him start-
ed in roping in
"He taught me how to
rope," said Green.
Through roping, he met
up with a couple' rodeo
cowboys, Earl Foster and -
Keith Baile y who .were '
putting on . a steer
wrestling school:
Andersen and Green' ..
had roped at• a .couple
