Brant Township. reeve David.
Thomson wasn't reassured by :those
figures, He: said the province
"walked away with a' windfall"
because .of increasedassessment on
farmland and a change in the farm-
land property tax rebate:
Assessment officer ;NO Weiler
said farmland value has 'increased
significantly' since the last base
year.
"I haven't seen those increases in
land values," Thomson countered,
indicating •he would, like a closer
look at assessment office. figures.
The finance committee morn
-
mended keeping the new ratios as
simple as possible' by -limiting the
number of property classes and
rejecting a. phase-in period. In, hi.s
report, chair Roland Anstett said the
county doesn't have enough .assess-
ment. in the optional classes to make
their 'introduction :beneficial, while
provincial regulations make'. the
administration of a phase -,in period
•" ,almost unmanageable".
•In spite of the recommendation,
Walkerton reeve Bob Mackie asked
for an; amendment to create a 'lame
industrial class'. The class, which
includes industries with more than.
125,000 square feet of floor space.
would affect one business in
• Walkerton.
"It ,will deduce the lax impact on
other industrial properties in
Walkerton and -across Bruce coun•
ty," Mackie said,
But .Lakeshore. area; reeves want-
ed to know how thenew tax class
would affeet.Ontario•Hydro and the
payments in lieu of taxes it. makes to
windfall
the .county. Support for Maekie's,
amendment evaporated when assess-
ment officer Rick Clarice reported
the new :class would reduce Hydro's
payments by $40,100. That shortfall
would have to be picked up by -other
property tax classes,, or show as a.
.cut to the county's budget.
"This amendment 'would give a
tax break to Ontario •Hydro; That's
not in the best interests of the cou.n-
ty, •so I will. be voting against it,"
Kincardin',e reeve 'Norm Anrietts
said, '
Mackie, Greenock reeve Roland
Anstett. Arran reeve. Ross ;Herron
and Brant reeve David Thomson
cast the only votes in favor of the.
large industrial class. St Edmunds.
reeve Rod Anderson and Albemarle
Albemarle
reeve .Carr Noble were absent for the
vote,
