Oone bevels higlwr hire

Huron County's air was harder to
breathe than Toronto's in last week's air
quality advisories.
Just because there isn't brown smog
hanging over rural towns, Dan Dobrin,
supervisor of air quality, pesticides and
environmental planning with the Ministry.
'Of the Environment said, "Don't be Iriis-
taken, the Ozone is high in those areas."
Air quality advisories are based on -
ground level ozone levels which are
recorded by the ministry at stations
across Southern Ontario including sta-
tions“ in London, Grand Bend and
Tiverton. .
• ' While Toronto had readings in the 40s,
Grand Bend reported a maximum air
quality index of 91, Tiverton had 77 and
-London reached .a 64 between Monday
and Thursday last week..:,
Readings' of 50 to 99 are considered •
poor`:. Readings. of 100-er above are con-
sidered very bad and can lead to serious
respiratory affects during light activity.
Emissions such as hydro carbons and
nitrogen oxide From industry.and vehicles
travel, through.' the air; sometimes long
distances. They react with the sur} on•hot,
sunny days and -are transformed into
Ozone. ••
"The sun kind of bakes,thesepollutants
and torms ozone," said Dobrin, adding its
a kind of'photo chemistry. reaction. Hot,
sunny weather is ideal for producing high
levels'of ozone.,
In lakeshore regions,"the conditions are
even better for the ozone because, as it
fortes over water, there is nothing for the
ozone toattach'itself to..
"Some rural areas, in fact, recordhigh-
er levels of ozone than the cities like
London, Windsor and Sarnia," Dobrin,:
said.
. In.a city like Toronto, he saidwhile
vehicle emissions contribute to the
ozone, they also help, "scavenge" it out,
eating away at the ozone in a system of
checks and balance.
"That doesn't mean Toronto is cleaner.
You're • only substituting' one pollutant for.
another," said,Dobrin. •
Here. when ozone coniesin front Over
the lake, the• levels are higher since it
can't attach to water. 'Instead, when it
' comes• inland, where there are less pollu-
tants, 'it
ollu-tants,'it begins connecting with plant -life
instead; • •
"The vegetation lessens; the ozone 1ev-
:els but is' damaged," Dobrin said;
