Firefighters from"the Lucknow and Ripley -Huron fire
departfnents battled a. stubborn barn and hay fire on
Friday night at the farm of Ed and Karen M*Gugan,, in
Kinloss Township,
The, dairy barn, locaied on Kairshea Avenue (sixth
concession); was completely:destroyed when combos -
ton ignited large hay, bales stacked. outside at the west
end of the••barn. The fire spread to the 40 cow barn.
'The cows were out in the field as Mr. McGugan had
just finished milking.'•He was making .his way -to .the
house for supper when he saw what Mrs. McGugan
described as a"wisp of smoke " They immediately•.
alerted the fire department. '
"it wentso quickly," said Mrs. MeGugan, The fire
spread from the'hay bales to the barn, where, hay teas
also stored Mrs. McGugan'said the hay""that ignited was:
baled a month ago; and they thought any danger would.,
have been past by now. •
The ;two fire .departments were on the scene until
close to midnight. Lucknow made at Ieast seven"trips
• back to town for water while the Ripley department
returned_ to that village for.water.
• The winds from the west fueled the fire in the bales ,
that were up against the barn. A hi -hoe arid several
front end loaders worked to move the biles, around to ,,
assist.the firefighters. , .•
Two small carves were lest in the blaze too::
