t has been many years
since Lucknow had a
hotel, but the village
once boasted asmany as
eight hotels before the
turn. of the century. We
have no accurate informa-
tion as to how many of
them were in 'operation at
the same time, or h+rrw
flourishing was their busi.-
ness,
In addition to -the hotels
there were two liquor
shops. Best retnetnbered,
it seems, was Sandy
Macpherson!s< shop, which
ended its days in the
humiliating, roleof a hen
house on the D. C Taylor -
property on Havelock
Street, later owned:' by
George. Elliott and Brrian
Johnston.
Under : the License Act
of 1906, hotels; paid .a
provincial and municipal
license .of $330. A shop
license was $.300: •

The Lee Hotel was in
the'. Playhouse theatre

also be rernembered.as the
location of D. C.; Taylor's
hardware store; .or as the
Wien. Murdie hardware.
The building was operated
as apartments by the late
Gordon Montgomery for
many years. This building
is irnmediately east .of
Finlay Decorating and is
now rented out aa apart*
ments by Wayne and Sue
Wai" of Wingharn. •
The first -hotel in
Lucknow is said to have
beenoperated by James.
"Muff" Campbell. It was.
located in the area of the '
old Bank of Montreal the
present. McDonagh
Insurance and Real Estate
site. •
The Great Western
Hotel was owned and built
by John Moore, This
hotel, naturally enough,
was built near the railway
station, on Havelock
Street', to cater to the
trunk -toting, salesmen and.
others who travelled
then, of course, exclusive-
ly by rail:. The building is
today in use by Henderson
Lumber Limited,. It's the-
