Winghatia and District
Hospital.
Such was the tone of
.the annuai meeting of the
hospital corporation held
on; Thursday evening in
the auditorium of
Wingham Public School.
After two years of gov-
emrnent cutbacks and the
historic move to a partner-
ship
artnership among eight hospitals
in Huron and Perth coun- •
ties the hospital' board.
"will continue to takeini-
tiatives to make the hospi-
tal better and to ensure' its
success in the future," says
Bob Pike, chairman of the
board's resource eorntnit-•
tee.
In the fall of 1996, it
was uncertain what the
future might hold for the
Wingham hospital and for
other smaller hospitals in

agreement Was signed ear-
lier this spring.
"So, we have .reached, a
period• of stability,".can-
eluded Roily Kaufman of
Winghatn, chairman of the
hospital foundation. "Is.

"It would seem to be," •
replied Pike, "Funding has
stabilized after two years
of cuts and all the hospi-
tals have their own. operat-
ing plans within .the' part-
nership.'
The cuts have not come -
without a • price. In
Wingham's case, the hos-
pital has been reduced' to
$Q beds under .a "foot,'
print' for health care in
the two counties. One hur-
dle remaining to be, faced
will occur later this sum-
mer when the, province's
Health Care' Restructuring
Commission visits the
area.
Responding to a ques-
tion:. from Kaufman,
Murray Hunter, a member
of the partnership's Joint
Executive Committee,
said the commission.
"could reject, accept or -
modify" the partnership
agreement.
Rowever, Hunter. did
say the partnership formed
by Huron and Perth hospi-
. tali "is not far -off" what
the comrnissiop is looking
for in rural areas:
