Dear editor:
This better is to address
some ofthe concerns .that
several merchants and res.,
idents of the downtown
area have regarding park
benches en the main
• street
1.am fully aware that
the people pushing for
new benches have the best
interests of the .townat
heart and feelthey would
boost civic . pride.
However, these same pea-
. pie do not live downtown.
Park. benches become
hang-outs with garbage,
cigarette butts and spilled
beer. The older people
who would appreciate. a
place to sit will not do so.
because generally the
benches are too filthy and
littered. •
Furthermore, after dark
wapt.hOchos
main stree
they become gathering
places for those who have
nothing better to do.
As someone who has
lived across; the street
from a park bench 1 have
been kept awake till all
hours of the night, by
yelling and obscenities
and verbal abuse when
you ask -them to keep it
down. Remember that
most of the ones using
these benches at night do
not have to get. up and go.
to. work,
Arid its the broken bot-
tles and garbage attest to
in the adorning at is not a
place. where •a person with
any self-respect would
wish to sit. •
Park benches are meant.
for parks, so 1 would sug-
gest that if we crust have
them, then put .them down
At the arena or the
Waterworks Park where
citizens won't have to put
up with the noise and
mess.
