Waste to
landfill site
reduced 29%
by Pat Livingston
During 1997, there was
a 29.08 per :cent" reduction
in Lucknow's municipal
waste. tonneage to the Mid
Huron Landfill site, when
compared to 1996.
The reduction can be
attributed largely to the
implementation of bag
tags at the beginning of
the second quarter of
1997. Increased usage of
the village's recylingpro-
gram was also a contribut-
ing factor,
Those figures translate
into a $3,052 reduction in
tipping fees for 1997. '.
Before bag tags, a typical
yeaur's tipping figures came
in at about $10,000.
Councillor Rick
McMurray says he expects
to see a 35 to 40 per cent
reduction of 1996• tonnes
in 1998, the •first full year
of the bag tag prograi i.

ter flow into sewa0
system is too bigh.
• by Pat Livingston
There's too much water going into
Lucknow's sewage system according to a
Ministry of Environment inspection The
flow appears to have increased by 50 per
centin-the last•three years. The operation
of the sewage works is impaired when
.flows are so high.
Significant rainfall or spring runoff
can substantially increase the sewage
flow; however, council has concerns that
non -conforming connections to the sewer
system are also contributing to the prob-
lem.:Connections which would bein con-
travention'of the sewer use bylaw include
basement .sump purnps;. weeping Wes and
eavestrough:
Ontario Clean Water Association rep.,
ressentatives told council that the flow per
capita is high considering 'the municipali-
ty has no water -using industry. The sewer
systeni is approaching 90 per cent calm-•
ity level, Twooptions are available: 1
reduce the flow, or 2, expand the plant
which would be a considerable costto all
ratepayers..
