Bruce County libraries receivedsome; good news last
week when the federal government announced the
recipients of ,Community Access Program (CAP) fund-
ing:
Local librarian Claudia Baskerville was :ecstatic
when told 'that Lucknow was oneof the, 18 libraries in
Bruce County approved for the funding that will pro-
vide equipment for an Internet site at the library.
Youwill recallthat over the past few months letters
were obtained from the area school principals and vari-
ous local organizations in support of the local library's
application. Also the funds from•the dinner theatre fea-
turing Ted Johns were earmarked• for the. project.
Through the CAP. funding, Lucknow:and area resi-
dents will
esi-dentswill now have access to the Internet and the social '
and economic benefits that result.

"Libraries have to have abalance," said Baskerville.
"You have to have modern technology for research, as
well as the traditional books. How else can you
research?"
Baskerville gave anexample of, where a person
needs very up-to-date material. "If somebody .carne in
today writing a ,paper on the Asian Market, there is. no •
current book. That's where the. Internet comes in."
Marzio Apollini, Director, of Bruce Comity Library
Services, was. happy "but with guarded enthusiasm"
considering the last few years and all the bad things
libraries have hadto deal, with,:
"We submitted 18 applications and; all of them :were
approved,", said Apollini. "Apparently .Bruce county had
the highest concentration of applications accepted' in
Canada. f was surprised. "We would have been happy
with half. We knew the competition was pretty rough." ' •
The whole value of the .project is about $260,000,
but the actual amount of money Bruce County libraries
will get from the federal government is about $126,000..
Part, of the formula involves in-kind donations of mater-
ial and staffing. •
Apollini said each branch will have a CAP site and
will be Internet capable "Da will bring the world to
you and you to the world;
Anaction plan will be devised, but Apoll'rn is hope -
fill that the Internet sites will be in place in the spring.
Right now he was just, happy they were getting, the
money,
