Westlake stated.
However, show up they
did, meeting Monday
morning •at the South
Huron Recreation Centre
where they filled out post-
cards, wrdte letters, made
protest signs and even
learned a song written by
four Goderich District
Collegiate Institute teach-
ers.
Each union .president
also addressed to crowd,
spending time on the podi-'
um answering questions
and talking about. heir
concerns with ::t.ill 160.
They reiterated issues
with thelegislation like
the government's agenda
to remove more money
from public education;
uncertified persons teach-
ing classes; teachers'
terms and conditions of
employment notremain-
ing part of the collective
bargaining process,
including class sizes,
assigned teaching timeand
planning time; and their
belief that there must be
some capacity for local
revenue generation.
"Bill 160 is undemocra-
tic. Bill 160, :misnamed
the Education Quality
Improvement Act, raises
v,ery'serious concerns,"
Dyck stated in his address,.'
calling it "anattack on
issues
publicly funded educa-
tion."
The union 1 r,esi lents
also outlined protesrplans..
for the rest of the week to
teachers. John Clarke,
Huron's officer for
OSSTF, stated that six
teams of about 100-120
teachers would be taking
turns picketing at Johns'
office, with each group•
protesting three hours
every other day.
Cruickshank noted the;
,importance to the `teachers
of being visible during this
protest. a
-"The government i:s
going to be noticing if we
are not out there," she stat-
ed to the crowd.
'yck also noted in an
earlier interview that one
of the teachers' best
chances at gaining support
will not be through large
advertising campaigns, but
by teachers talking to par-
ents in their community.
"We will gain the sup-
port and respect of the par-
ents in our community by
those one on one conver-
sations," he stated.
"Individual teachers; that's
our strength,"
He added that parents
and pther community
members will have a
chance to hear some of
their local •teachers'
thoughts at three' public
forums planned for .tomor-
