The Society was first organized in,1901, dis- banded during World War I and reorganized in 1957. The guest speaker was Patricia Bellamy, a refer- ence librarian at the Robarts Library in Toronto who has roots in. the county., Her topic was The .Lewis Settlement of Huron Township and. Ripley. Oue hundred and, nine Scottish families ernigrat- ed from Lewis in 1851 to the .southwestern part' of ruce,, one of the last block settlements in Canada West. In Scotland they were experiencing unemploy- ment, famine due to poor harvests,, potato blight, scarcity of herring and. exploding population. They were evicted by their landlord who helped to pay for their journey to Hamilton, where ` they' spent the first winter. In 1852 they proceeded to Goderich and generally by small boats travelled to their destination north to Huron Township. ° Their first glimpse of their future hoines would be a solid -line of unbroken forest, dark and forbid ding, completely opposite '_to the ,treeless, stony .land- scape of Lewis. One can only imagine the struggles and, priva- tions which they endured, butthey persevered. and I:' today that part of Bruce is considered one of the best in the county.
