Those who have entered slogans,
may enter again, those .who have not,
let's do it now.
Entries can be dropped off with your
name' and address at the Village ;Office, Tourist
Office or Lucknow Sentinel.
Prizes will be awarded to,the top three entries.
Historical Society
celebrates 40 years
The annual dinner
meeting of. the Bruce
County Historical Society
was held. Oct. 11 at the
Underwood Community
Centre. Three charter
members: Becky. Hunter
Of 'Tiverton, , Donaida
McClure of Chesley, and
Jean Scott of Kincardine
were present to help cele-
brate the Society's 40th
anniversary.
The Society was first
organized in,1901, dis-
banded during World War
I and reorganized in 1957.
The guest speaker was
Patricia Bellamy, a refer-
ence
librarian at the
Robarts Library in
Toronto who has roots in.
the county., Her topic was
The .Lewis Settlement of
Huron Township and.
Ripley.
Oue hundred and, nine
Scottish families ernigrat-
ed from Lewis in 1851 to
the .southwestern part' of
ruce,, one of the last
block settlements in
Canada West.
In Scotland they were
experiencing unemploy-
ment, famine due to poor
harvests,, potato blight,
scarcity of herring and.
exploding population.
They were evicted by
their landlord who helped
to pay for their journey to
Hamilton, where ` they'
spent the first winter.
In 1852 they proceeded
to Goderich and generally
by small boats travelled to
their destination north to
Huron Township.
° Their first glimpse of
their future hoines would
be a solid -line of unbroken
forest, dark and forbid
ding, completely opposite
'_to the ,treeless, stony .land-
scape of Lewis.
One can only imagine
the struggles and, priva-
tions which they endured,
butthey persevered. and
I:'
today that part of Bruce is
considered one of the best
in the county.
The Society's slate of
