Allene !: radley presided for the Thanksgiving program. She opened with a poem "Count Your Blessings," fol- lowed by the hymn "Count Your Many lessings' with .lean Conley playing the' guitar, accompanied by her sister Donalda Moffat on tape. Thanksgiving readings were given by Mrs. Bradley.and Grace Gibson. Mrs. Conley played two instrumentals. Mrs. Bradley read an article from the September Observer that ;told of the ways the group had celebrated its 35th anniver- sary this year. Anniversary banners were. displayed and the ways we had refur- bished a room at, Five Oaks in memory of Marion McFarlane. Ella Hackett presided for the business. opening with a poem "Crimson Days of Autumn." Lois reported on the fall retreat she and. Glenda Morrison had attended at Wildwood Lodge, Red ay. • Lois read an article on Belgium and reported on the Bruce Presbytery which was held in the United Church recently. Jean McLeod had a September ,birth- day and the jar was passed. • Following the Benediction, Mrs. Hackett and Tena Gardner served refresh- ments. (submitted by Aliene Bradley) G1;dys Robertson spaks on Thanksgiving blessings Guests from Kinlough, Whitechurch and Trinity joined with the members of the Lucknow Presbyterian WMS for their fall Thankoffering meeting held in the church on Oct. 8. President Norma ]Baynard welcomed every- one and opened the meet- ing by reflecting on some of God'sblessingswe should be thankful for. The worshipservice from the Glad Tidings was led by Lois Farrish with readings ': by Grace Gammie and Mildred Loree. Muriel Moffat and Phemie Cameron gathered the offering with the offer- tory prayer by the leader. The special speaker was our own Gladys Robertson speaking on Thanksgiving Blessings. She gave the, ins;ory of the first Thanks,;i' ing held by the Plymouth Pilgrims in 1621. Of the 101 men, women and children. that arrived in America look- ing for a place where they could worship without persecution, half of them died •the first winter. So the Indians wouldn't know the extent of'their losses they planted corn over their graves, At harvest time they set aside a day to give thanks to God for their blessings. Gladys compared our affluent society to the early pilgrims and said how much more we have to be thankful for com- pared to them. She closed with a poem by Edgar Guest, "Thanksgiving." Shirley Hawthorne thanked everyone that had contributed towards the meeting. Following the singing of a special Hymn "We Remember With Thanksgiving". a time of fellowship was enjoyed. According to Charlie, MacInnes, OMNR, there was only one rabid, fox found in all of southern Ontario, during the period from April 'to 'June, The. fox, which was found near Stratford, was the first rabid fox found in south- ern Ontario...since November•:. 1996. During the same quar- ter, there were seven rabid.. foxes found: in northern Ontario, all: of which were in the Cochrane district. Therewas a. total of seven rabid skunks report- ed in,Ontario, three of which were in southern Dufferincounty. In the first half of 1997, ,there • were 15 rabid skunks reported, 60, per cent less than the. 38 which•were found during the same period in 1996. The number of rabid skunks is 'falling fast; , because there are so few 'rabid foxes. In the first.six: mouths of '1996, there were 65 rabies casesin. southern.. Ontario, abouthalf of what there had been the previous year.' This year there .have been. only 26 cases. Obviously the rabies bait- ing program continues, to be very' effective. Clinics The Grey Bruce Own Sound Health ,Unit, in co- operation with the Grey Bruce Veterinary Association will be offer ing low cost rabies clinics again this month. You can have your pets inoculated in Lucknow on Oct. 22, 2:30 - 5:30 p.m., at the PUC shed. The cost is $10 per animal, with a maximum of $45 for five or more cats.
