'certificates
To the editor:
.11 am .writing this open
letter on behalf of the
Lucknow •and District
Chamber of Commerce, in
my capacity of secretary,
and in response to a letter
I received from a
Lucknow business person.
For several months,
there have been discus-
sions at Chamber meetings
regarding ,the redemption
policy- for Chamber Gift
Certificates. Some mem-
bers' felt that the certifi-
cates should only be. hon-
ored at places of business
'where owners were mem-
hers in good standing of
the Chamber. Others felt
that the certificates were
being pdrehased in, good
faith and as a goodwill
gesture designed to •pro-
mote shopping locally.
At the meeting when
the vote was taken to set
down the policy, very few
members were present. It
just happened that those
who believed, the certifi-
cates .:should only be
redeemed by • Chamber
member
businesses
outnumbered'
those who
felt different-
l'y.
The irony
of the situa-
tion is that if
more mem-
hers • had
been in
attendance at the meeting,
the vote may have had a
different outcome. •
As a. result • of `the vote,
'it was decided Co send a
form letter to all Lucknow
and District businesses to
inforin them of the policy
regarding the.certiicates.
There has been some
negative feedback from
the business community;
however, only one .mer-
chant took the time to
write a letter.
Nonetheless, Chamber
members
have re-
examined
the rationale
for the poli-
cy.and agree
that the
potential for
harm out-,
weighs any
benefits
Therefore,
Chamber of Commerce •
Gift Certificates may be
accepted by •any Lucknow
and District business, and
willhe honored by the
Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber members
regret that their good
intentions have gone awry.

to assume that the actual
intent was to encourage
businesses to hecome
members. In no way
should the letter have been
interpreted as vindictive,
punitive, or threatening.
We are a scall commu-
nity, 'with businesses strug-
gling to meet,the chal-
lenges of a difficult and
evolving marketplace. The
Chamber's mandate to pro-
mote and support local
business . remains
unchanged. There is too.
much at stake for us to ,he
divided by misunderstand-
ings. A strong And cohe-
sive Chamber plays a
major role in maintaining
a vibrant, healthy business
environment.
We • encourage ail
Lucknow and District
business owners to join us
so that they may have •a
voice and an active role in
shaping Lucknow's future.
