Short terms recommendations;
board can set own schedule
°ffrrrtn page 1
tee recommended a corn -
promise that will see twice
monthly daytime meetings
Of the new board, with
committeesto be set, up as
required for the Heavy
workload of the amalga-
mation process. It also rec-
ommended the new board
follow Grey .county's
example. and open meet-
ings by •giving members
,time ' for a short silent
reflection.
,The recommendations
are very short term, said
Grey trustee 'Norene
Pilkington, noting the new
hoard has the :authority to
set its own schedule and
bylaws. ' -
In spite of that, Bruce.
vice-chairFrank Eagleson,
argued strongly in favor of
daytime meetings.
"We've tried several
times' to have evening
meetings," he , said. "We
can't seem. to make them
work."
Eagleson noted the
safety' considerations of
sendingtrustees to . make
the long trek to Tobermory
or Cape Croker late at,
night after • a winter
.evening.' meeting. He also
suggested that people at
the table couldget'. "pretty
.grumpy" after, l0.pm or so.
"Grey people. never:. get
.grumpy. We' start •: mut
grumpy," quipped
Pilkington.' ..:
Regardless of the meet-
ing -time, •the nine trustees
on the •new'' board likely
face a heavy workload.
"Fewer trustees on each
committee •mean, fewer
with a background on the
issues,".said Grey chair
Ron Motz.
"You're going to have .a lot
of discussion at the board
table to, clarify recommen-
dations:"
"The number of meet-
ings should be determined;
by the number of trustees,
which is changing radical-
ly, and the number of com-
mittees," -suggested Bruce
trustee Barry Schmidt.
Bruce Director Paul
Martindale. predicted the
workload of the new board
will depend on the role of
the trustee.
"The Minister is vague
:right now .(on that • role).
We do not have, as usual,
all the . information we'd
like to. have," he said.
Martindale cautioned
•
that the January 1 amalga-
mation date doesn't neces-
sarily mean ' both systems
wilt completely integrate
on that day.
"Some people expect a
blitzkrieg where it ' all .
comes together January 1,"
Martindale said.
"That's not what I see. I
suggest a lwo'to three year
process of reviews and
revising policies."
Grey ' Director Janet
Glasspool agreed • with
,Martindale's extended time
frame.
• . "Where it'. impacts
directly • on students, we
need time to consult with
• the public," she said 'about
the changes to policies and
prograrrtming..under amal-
• gamation.
.Tuition savings
Will be.. a bonus
for some families
'from page 1 t
Martindale said, enrollment projections and Continuity
for students will be `considered in decisions` about:
which schools students' will attend in the district board.
Meanwhile, amalgamation will mean ,a tuition sav-
ing for some parents. Bruce county :families that now:
pay tuition to have their children attend Grey county
schools, and vice "versa, will no longer have to pay
:when the, two boards ainalgamate<on January 1..
"This .is good news for about,400 families that will'
hp longer have. to pay fees," Martindale. said,, Tuition
fees for students attending school outside Bruce and
Grey still apply, he added.,
