• 'Awesomee' tine an Nrewfoundland
by Pat Livingston
A two-week trip to
Newfoundland, on an
inter -provincial exchange,
will be remembered .by.
Colleen Dalton as the cul-
mination to her in-depth •
involvement with 4-R.
It was an "awesome"
trip for the 20 -year-old
Ashfield Township.
woman; an opportunity to
see a province she
describes as both barren
and .beautiful; to meet the
"friendly" people and'leai;n

almost non-existent; and to
enjoy the • traditional
Sunday "jigs dinner."
'Coljeen's first week was
spent with a; family in'
Portugal Cove South, on
the . east coast 'of • the -
Atlantic province:
She describes the .east.,
coast as barren, but beauti-t
ful, 'having to 'travel sever-
al miles before you come
to the next little village. It's
an area that was alive with,
cod fishing, then main
source of income for fami-
lies.
The sadde,st part • was,,
listening. to the people tell
about how it used to be,
how .they feel ;cheated by
the government , and how
difficult kis to make ends.

:Her second week'was in
St David's on 'the. west •
coast, where Colleen said
she was, ' reminded of

the , east coast, and inore`
farming - mixed;
dairy and cash crop
of mostly hay. Her
host family here
worked on dairy
farm.
In the province of
Newfoundland,
Colleen said they,
have a junior 4-H
category for. those
between five and
nine years old, as
well as the. 10 to 21
year-old division as
•found • .here in
Ontario. They . also host
Camp Nipper, a provincial
4-H . camp.
Clubs in the east con-
centrate ,mainly on the
skilled projects - cooking,
sewing, etc., where the
west clubs are mostly
dairy-orientedd.
