Ross Hamilton of
Wingham is the grand
prize winner of the Blyth
Festivals "There's .a Typo
in•the Paper" contest. Ross
receives a pair of tickets to
see There's Nothing in the
Paper, the Festival comedy
about a small town news-
paper which inspired the
' contest. Hank and Sam;
two of the play's funniest
characters who count mis-
takes in their local news-
paper, would be proud of
the number and variety of
goofs and gaffes received.
Ross brought in a clip-
ping containing a typo
from a newspaper that was
so infamous that three dif-
< ferent people submitted
the same on (Ross got it to
us first). Even though it,
once inadvertently
appeared imprint, it cannot
. be repeated here as most
editors would not know-
ingly re -print it. Let's just
say that it was art: article
about firemen trying to get
dressed in a hurry,to get to
a fire and .a certain item of
clothing, namely socks,
being tough to find.
"Socks" was spelled
wrong, with ,the first letter
being replaced by another
letter and you can guess
which one.
Besides Ross, there
were four other contest
prize winners; including
. June Fothergill of
Londesboro, • Dorothy
Bassett of .Seaforth, Pat.
Livingston, editor of the
Lucknow Sentinel and
Janet Baillie of Wingham.
June's typo was from a
news account that reported
her mother was sick and
a 'typo award
under the doctor's "car"
instead of the doctor's
"care".(what a. difference
dropping one letter in a
word can make).
Dorothy's mistake was
taken from a newspaper ad
which promised the cus-
tomer's money back "it
100% satisfied,"
Pat's was from a classi-
fied ad which mistakenly
offered "chunks" (pigs)
under the "For Hire" col-
umn instead of "For Sale."

Janet's submission was
an oddly phrased headline
fr+m a recent Toronto Star
t read: "Man hit by
wheel in intensive care"'.
(just what was that wheel
doing flying around inten-
sive care anyway).
There were many more •
great entries but the con-
test could only include
five winners, The Festival
thanks everyone who took
the time and effort to send
in their favorite newspaper
goofs.
arnng issued
after two die
in grain bin
The deaths of two
young easterti. Ontario
men in a grain bin have
prompted the;Farni Safety
Association to issue a
warning about the hazards
of flowing grain. The indi-
vidualshad entered the bin
to break down bridged
grain. They soon became
engulfed in grain and were.
unable to free themselves.
• As • grain harvest
begins, the Association'
• wants to remind farmers
and' workers that flowing
grain can act much like
"quicksand" and once, an
individual is caughtup to
his/her knees there can be
no escape. One should not
enter a grain' bin or wagon
when grain is flowing.
If': one. must enter a
,grain bin or wagon, basic
entry procedures for con' -
fined spaces must be fol-
lowed:
1. All mechanical and
electrical equipment must
be locked out to 'prevent
accidental -start-up.
2. Use the buddy system
and wear a lifeline,
Sufficient equipment and
manpower must be avail-
able. The extra person is
there to monitor the situa-
tion and to summon assis-
tance if needed.
3. Test the atmosphere for
oxygen and toxic gases. If
the silo is sealed, there
could be a lack of oxygen
or toxic buildup of,gases.
4. If a toxic atmosphere
exists, you Must wear a
self-contained breathing
apparatus: and ventilate the'
area if possible.
5. Establish `some form. 'of
communication: verbal,
hand signals, line signal,$
