"It also eliminatesone
massive municipality," he
said.
The committee will
also present the original
proposal which has been
- amended to allow one vote
on county council' for .
every, 3,500 e'lectors;
rather than every • 5,000

Huron County 'may soon : be the toilet of
Ontario.. , .
As the number.of intensive livestock
operations in Huron. County .increases; so
has Concern about how those operations
will deal with the amounts of manure
they produce.
The manure is used.as fertilizer, but if
it is improperly spread or too much of it
• is spread, the . raw waste. runs off the land
into rivers, wells, water stables • and the
lake. The result is unhealthy waters
which can carry sickness and -even death-.
The Killing Fields '
Colborne Twp.. resident Ernie
Marshall called the . m.egafartns ."outra-
geous" and said, it something isn't done,
"they're going to kill us."
Marshall took a water sample .frdrn a
drainage ditch near his property: recently
and gave it to the Huron County. Health
Unit. The water was tested, and the'results
showed the .liquid in the stream was little
snore than' raw. sewage.
In, 1991, a• 250,000 -gallon liquid
Manure storage tank was installedon a
farm downstream'. from Marshall's prop-,
erty. ..
Since then, Marshall has complained
to township and health officials each year
as ecrertnent is dumped annually into the
creek. •. •
This year, with the stibrtiission of the
water sample; Marshall hoped action
would be taken, -but as far 'as he.knows,
nothing has yet been done.
Some feel nothing can ,be done, at
least not by the government. •
