Why do cattle emit
methane? _•
It's just the Way they're lA
:.made. Cgws,' like bison,
elk and deer, are ruminant
animals, which means the
feed brews • and. ferments
almost' like beer - in the

partments. This prepares
the food for the digestion
process in the 'other stom=
delis an4l intestines..
Mathison compared
cows to other ruminants to
see how .they measure up..
Bison,. Elk and: deerhave
all _been tested. during,
Mathison's 12years of
methane research. Cattle
and bison are the highest.
methaneemitters while
• deer and elk produce .less
because food doesn't stay
in their system as long
giving less time for
methane to be created.
Mathison: also 'found
that cattle produce more '
methane in winter than
,summer. Methane eniis-
sions increased by 25 per
cent inthe cold. While the
exact reason is still
, unknown', it may be attrib-
• utable to a decrease- in
how efficiently cows
digest in colder tempera-
tore. .

Typically, farmers use
one ,of two grazing sys-
tems. Cattle can graze on a
rotational'. basis, moving
from one pasture to the
next, or, on a continual
basis. Stocking rates --
increasing or decreasing

land -- was once thought
