Newspaper corxtedy hits home
by -Pat Livingston
"There's Nothing in. the
Paper" is a phrase readers
'and editors are all. too
familiar with, but is also
one that will certainly be
remembered as the title to
a new play that premiered
at Blyth Festival Theatre
last week. The comedy,
written by David Scott,
kept the audience laughing
throughout. ...
Media from small
weeklies could identify
with the everyday trials
faced by George Stewart,.
the editor, of the struggling
Shadowville Examiner,
Non -media types
appeared to find the play
just as humorous .as they
listened to Sam (Dick
Murphy) .and Hank
(VernonChapman) portray
two old cronies who lived
to find mistakes in the
paper. They never hesitate
to let Stewart, played by
Jerry Franken, know their
feelings about .what they
see as the decline of the
paper. They simply cannot
understand why the.peace-
ful death of an old dog
wouldn't make a good
news item and picture for
their local paper:
Stewart also has to con-
tend with. Nellie (Sharon
Bakker), the newspaper
office' ..manager, who
insists W.V. Wilson, the
deceased -former publisher
of the Examiner, wouldn't.
have done things that way.
Nellie's continual berating
about "When W.W. was
publisher...", along with
Stewart's own disillusion-
ment, drive him to the'sec-
and drawer of the filing
cabinet on a regular basis
for a 'little nip'. Stewart
comes face to face with
W.W.'s ghost on these 'nip-
ping' occasions and is
forced to reckon with his
own conscience, ,
Kirsten Van Ritzen, as
.ad salesperson Joan, is a
bubbly 'go get ern'
younger. woman, who also
has the divorced Stewart
.contemplating her as more
than an . advertising per-
son.
Beverley Elliott, is
vivacious as ever, in her
role as Brenda, the wait-
ress, who attempts to
thwart the gossiping of the
two old boys.
Enter the city slicker,
Bob Best (Brian Paul),
who starts up a new paper
in competition with
Shadowville's 100 year
old paper. Smooth talking,
Bob's higher salary wins
Joan over to his camp, and
the new 'rag' is off and
running with stories that
threaten to destroy reputa-
tions
eputa-
tion s and divide the com-
munity.
Scott,' the editor of the
Seaforth Expositor; •has'
called upon his -own expe-
riences in the industry to
come up with a very funny
play, but one that also` con-
tains many truths faced by
rural newspaper .editors
-:and theix_ communities,.
Tntertwined with the com-
edy is an underlying vein
. of soberness that address,
es a moral dilemma.
There's Nothing in the
Paper will .run in conjunc-
tion with other produc-
tions at the. Festival until -
