Turnberry farther George Underwood is the new
chairman of the board of governors at Wingham and
District Hospital, Hee took over the position at the 1997-
98 inaugural meeting of board following the recent
annual meeting of the hospital corporation.
Underwood, former vice chairman of the board,
replaces Noreen ,Gnay, outgoing chairman. Bob Pike of
Wingham moves into the vice chairman's seat.
Six members of the hospital board were returned by
acclamation and include: Gnay, representing Blyth and
East Wawariosh Township: Donna Moffat,Lucknow-
Kinloss; Bruce Hahn, Brussels; John -MacDonald,
Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesd
Teeswater-Culross and Mary Lou Cameron and Murray
Hunter, both representing the Town. of Wingham.
Other members of the hospital board for 1997-98
are: Marie McIntosh, Morris Township; John Stafford,
director -at -large; Chris Dickson, Howick Township;
Verna 'Steffler; Wingham; Dr. Brian Hanlon, hospital
chief of staff; Wingham Mayor Don Carter, town
appointee; Dr. Michael Shubat; Dr. Marie Gear; Helen
Rintoul, Ashfield and West Wawanosh Townships;
Margaret MacLeod, hospital auxiliary president; Gord
Baxter, hospital treasurer and Lloyd Koch, executive
director and board secretary.

Considering the turbulent tim4s of•the last year
regarding, hospital restructuring in Huron and Perth
counties, the recent annual meeting of the Wingham
Hospital Corporation was a low-key affair,
Noreen Gnay, outgoing hospital board chairman,said
that 1996-97 provided. many challenges to the board and
many tense mothents, right from the release • of the
Huron-Perth.District Health Council Task Force's three
options on hospital restructuring late last year to the
eight -hospital alliance, which currently is determining a.
model for governance and administration in the two
counties.
Gnay paid tribute to the Wingham Hospital Action.
Committee, .which rallied public support ,for the local'
hospital and 'helped to bring home the message that the
people of Huron -Perth wanted to see alleight of, their
• hospitals remain`open.
' This was the basis for the eight -hospital alliance,'
which led to the development of 'a proposal "which how
-forms the -footprint oaf't lie' Task Force's and'thre,=DHC's
current preferred option for hospital restructuring,"::said-

The hospitals'` leaciershi :, remains committed to the.
consolidation of.admini`stration' and governance, she
continued:. Currently, the concept of a single board, with
certain .responsibilities retained locally, is favored, said
Gnay.: A position paper on governance that each:, board
-may use to talk with its community, is expected in the
coming weeks,,with input sought over the summer,

.April, 1998;
