Bruce Board of Education,
Oniy four trustees will be 'prob ,ear . c"
Giving Bruce county
just four trustees on the
new . Bruce -Grey District.
boardwill be 'problematic'
according to the chair of
the Bruce county board of
education, Jennifer
Yenssen. predicted the dis-
trict board, due to be set up
in January, will have to
include a, new role for its
handful of trustees.
"One thing that, we,
haven't :been told is what
'the role of the trustees will
be," Yenssen • said about
Legislation under the Fewer
School ,Boards .Act„ much:
of, which is still in draft
'stages.. "There has to be a
very ' different role for •
trustees. The way we have
been operating as trustees,
that cannot continue. once
you take 14 down to four,"
Yenssen said.
Trustees currentlyrserve
on ' eight different board
conunittees. Many trustees
also regularly attend Home
and School or, SCAC meet-
ings, special events at the ,
schools, and, community
meetingsthat involve.
schools. in their area. There
are 30 elementary .and six
secondary .schools 'in .the
county.
So far, : it's not known
what the area boundaries
will be .for .the trusties on
the new district, board. In
other years, that ..decision
was made in consultation
between the director of
education and municipal.
clerks .in the county. The
Fewer School Boards Act
gives the ,Education
Improvement Commission -
final say over that deci-
sion. -
.'No' to referendum
Another board's request
for a referendum on amal-
gamation the, public and
separate school systems
failed to Win 'su ....port from:
the Bruce board of educa
deo.
am a. strong propos.'{
nent of one system, but
thereis too touch going on
now," said trustee Ruth
Hirtenfeld, who -agreed.
with the board's decision•:to
pass on the issue,
"There are' so' 'many
amalgamations already.
We have• to take a long
hard look at the economics
of it," . said trustee Dennis
.Fosthumus.
Board chair Jennifer
Yenssen said the Bruce
board . has argued in the
past that amalgamations do
not necessarily' create• cost
savings.
"It's a • constitutional
issue," Yenssen said about
the ' status of separate
school boards. •
