The play won the Chalmers Award in 1982 and the Governor General's Award for Drama in 1983 after pre - tiering at the Festival in 1981 and, 16 years later, it is still being produced and studied by students in schools and universities, Quiet in the Land is a finely -drawn portrait of an old order Amish commu- . nity held together by its 'strict moral beliefs,. German ancestry and paci- fism, The tensions and • devastation of World War 1 threaten to split the com- munity when Christy, a stern elder, is challenged by his rebellious son Yock. When a .non, amish school friend is wounded at the front, Wel( rejects his heritage, family and the girl he loves to enlist in the army and defend Canada.
