HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1997-05-28, Page 3• Over the last 40 years, the Lucknow and District Lions Club has truly lived up to the Lions' motto - . "We Serve." Friday night was.set aside for members and guests to celebrate the occasion and reminisce about the forming of the club and its accomplish- ments over the years. From an interdenomi- national young men's Sunday class at the United Church, carne a civic' club of 10 members called the Arena Club, which was.. formed to, build the arena in 1937. ` After the arena was built, they change& the name to "The Clansmen." In 1956 the Clansmen dis- banded to make way for the. "Lions." On Jan., 26, 1957, 300 roaring Lions packed the Recreation Centre (now 'the Legion Hall), led by the Wingham and Goderich Lions Clubs -:to charter. Lucknow Lions with president Rae Watson and 93 members. Being strategically, located, the Club had members from Lucknow, Ashfield, West Wawanosh : and Kinloss.. The Club. rotated the meeting place from Kinlough, Lucknow, St.' 'Helens, .Holyrood; Hackett Church and.: the Church at Crewe. Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, May 28, 1.997 — Page 3 . In .later years, the. group alternated between the. restaurants in 'town until the new Community Centre was built. •- Early • fund-raising events included ruminage 'sales, selling light bulbs, peanuts etc,; and the very popular garden partiaes with Monte Carlo 'nights held in the arena. the Loins were also for tunate to operate a • food: booth' at .the„ tractor pull for a number of year, and they now have the weekly bingo event. • . Some of the early 'monies went to hockey sweaters, school band, asphalt floor in the arena, and the Dungannon ball 'lights:' the first major project .was_. the artificial ice plant and permanent floor in the arena. Then came the swim ming pool, the Community 'Centre; house numbers, fiberglass on the fence and upgrading of the pool and park area. The Club spearheaded the Novice hockey<.tourna-: ment, the Zamboni for the arena, and the ;jaws of life for the 'fire department, The Lions were also very instrumental, along with• many other service groups, in paying off the new. Lucknow and District- Sports istrictSports Complex (1995) in record time. These fund-raising events were .all over and above the usual Lions -ori- ented projects which include. Easter Seals,: , Diabetes Lake Joe for the Blind, Lions, Dialysis Camp, CNIB Leader Dog, Loins Foundation of• Canada, Disasters in Quebec, Woodstock,. Grand Valley. Ronald MacDonald. House, and Youth Exchange. The local Lions 'Club was one of the first in the area to 'purchase telccap- tion tv decoders for the. deaf. They assisted the Wi,ngham hospital expan- sion, furnishing the emer gency room With $10,000 in honor of Dr. Jack ' McKim. The Club also established a scholarship for area students in memo- ry of Dr. Mel Collin. The Club currently boasts 4$ members, five of whom are charter Members - Omar Brooks, .Donald MacKinnon, Gordon. Brooks. Over the years, the suc- cess of the Lucknow and District Lions has been boosted by the Lucknow Lions Ladies, whose assis- tance has -always been there in full force.
