writer bel.ieves columnist has a 'naive' view
Dear editor:
In response to Tracey Doerr's column
"Custodians didn't have to insult public
withplea for help" in the March 26/97
edition of the Lucknow Sentinel .there
`was ,surprise to see that some individuals
are still naive',enough to still believe that
monies saved in custodial costs .(if any
appreciable costs are there to be realized)
will go back into the classroom, 9
Tracey still doesn't get it! The reason
for cutting costs to education, not to men-
• tion health care, is solely for the purpose
of paying the staggering. figure, some-
where in the .$4 billion dollar range, for
the senseless 30 per cent tax cut.promised
to us by the, provincial government:
The perspective of a small town
reporter defending small town private
business is.• admirable, but she misses the
real point of all of this. This is a game '
being played in the• big arena which pits
the, large American corporations, assisted

knowingly., by the provincial government,'
against the unions whose members are
individuals in your community, who are
trying`to do nothing more than to be able
to support their families and .their com-
munities, just as Tracey is.
Why would a large American corpora-
tion be interested: in the small school in
your community? Because it ,will soon be
part of the new larger board of education,
and there will only be 66 in the province,.
which makes it that much easier for large -
American companies to take over huge.
portions of the education sector at a time.
What's wrong with that? The cost of
hiring these corporations may at first'
seem `attractive. The local private clean-
ing company or the mom and pop opera-. ;
tion will not be ,able to compete, in
acquiring these new contract's because the
large corporations will be able to under-
write losses just to get the, contract. In
time, and this has been proven time.and
time again, once the contract is secured
the price will increase tothe point where
no effective savings -are realized.- Local
individuals will be paid minimum wage
with no benefits, thereby leaving no dis-
posable ncome to help support their
communities, let alone their families. The
profits will go directly to -the States and
will not been seen in, our communities.
If that's not bad' enough, what happens
say 10 years down the road when the
light clicks on and the residents • of this
province say enough's enough, lets get
rid of those Anierican companies so that;
our tax dollars are reinvested in our own
communities, .. •
No so. •easily done.. Remember
NAFTA? The. North American Free
Trade. Agreement, If we want to give the
bums rush to these corporationswe will
then have to pay hundreds of millions of
-dollars in compensation to them, or they
don't have to go anywhere. Voila, the
•
Americanization of the Canadian educa-
tion sector worker is fait accomplit, much
to the loss of our smal1•community
school and our community in general.
That's what private business is about.
We do not believe public tax dollars
should go to private corporations as. prof
• it, dspecially American corporations.
The education system is in a very pre-
carious position, this is not the time to
turn our education system into a business
for profit. The tru. e profit is well rounded
students willing and able to be productive
members in our communities:
Tracey don't confuse what you per-
ceive as bragging with individuals who
are proud of the way they carry out their
responsibilities, and their dedication, not
because of profit, but because they are an .
intrinsical part of the ,school, and your
communities, 'and have been' for over 25 ,
years.
