Custodians do a lot more than Learn to Surf the Internet
push a broom, says writer
Dear Editor:
This letter is a response to a col-
umn written in the Lucknow
Sentinel dated March 26, entitled
'Custodians didn't have to insult
public with plea for help,'
I feel the writer has grossly mis-
judged public employees in our
schools. The pamphlet sent out by
the custodians, cleaners and mainte-
nance workers was by no means
intended to be self -admiring or ego-
tistical. The flyer was clearly outlin-
ing a days work for the job descrip-
tion of a custodian.
Some people may not be aware of
all the responsibilities custodians
encounter in'any given day .at our
schools. Custodians do a lot more
than just push a broom. They are a.
intricate part of every school.
Secondly, the flyer never said that,
private enterprise does not take pride
in their worlc. The custodian's Solder
was pointed out that private business •
depends upon profit as a means of
motivation, Profit should neve r 'be
discussed in connection with any
school, Schools, are there for the stu-
dents --rewards and profits are mea-
sured by the students' results and
accomplishments.
The flyer distributed to the publit
was a democratic right to make indi-
viduals aware of Bill 104 and how
many public employees (custodians,
secretaries, libratians and education
aids) eouldlose their jobs if this hill
were to be passed. Bill 104 will take
away all successor rights of public
employees. .
Each and every public employee
plays a major part in the running of
any school. They are not ,an object to
be tossed away by this government.
They arepart of, the -school family.
