by Andy Roder
mu producers, and the
Perth County Emu
roducers, are growing
simultaneously.
The local association—one of
the first ever created in the
province and seen as an .indus
try leader ---held their 2nd annu-
al Emu • Congress in IVIitchell
March 1, with positive results.
More than 70 people regis-
tered for the 'day -long infornna-
tion session, President Sylvia
Roth said, . and noted the..
growth is obvious since
last year's congress was
.held in 'a small, .one -
room location for two
hours. '
"The growth is here," she
said simply. "There are a
.lot of new producers
who want to know more ..
about the industry."
Roth, of .•Gadshill, operates
Walkabout Acres with her hus-
band Doug: The Roths are one
of 13' active members: of the
association,:abut she said there
are, 22 emu farms in Perth
County,• •
The , Perth County Emu
?roducers were founded in 1995'
as,a separate group of farmers
were:.'eager to discuss their.
fledgling' industry?, and circulate
various information and events
quickly.
The association is a,member
of the. Ontario Rati.te,
Association ((ORA) and the
Canadian 'Emu Association, -
with plans in the works to create
zones of producers: in, the
province, with Perth likely
linked with Huron. County.
Emu, the second largest bird
in the world, is native to
Australia
but has .
been siic-
cessfully
bred` . in
North America'
the -past few years.'
The birds can grow to
five to six-feet=tall. and weigh.
'80420 lbs, at ' maturity 'and run
up to 30.m/ti.
The laying season is fall to.
the" spring; with, an average
annual production per hen of
20-40 eggs, each weighing on
average 500 . g: The incubation
period, for the eggs is 52 days.;
The future 'of the pinu corn-
' mercially is unlimited,. the .asso
cia'tion's brochure boasts, as
nearly every part of the, bird has
value. in November of 1994, the.
first emu marketing co-op wa.
-established in, Ontario, as the
industry has grown. commercial.
ly with the birds harvested for
their meat, leather, oil and
feathers. . ,
Sue Vance, an emu producer
with her husband Ron at RR 1„
Innerkip, was. one of the guest
speakers at the congress, and
she explained how they got
started. She stressed that those
raising emu must promote their
own product.
"Blow your own horn a lit-
tle.,..show off: what you have,"
she said, wearing a dress frilled
with emu feathers and leather.,
"You've got to use your own
product and constantly promote
it," she added,
'We're a brand new indus-
try...,*e're just babies and:
we're just learning."
Rath notes ,that the industry
has started to change despite its
youthfulness, explaining that
investors drove up the; price of
emu -related products a few
years ago but now those with a
farm background are successful-
ly, raising them as' their liveli-
hood:
"It's' livestock and we're com-
mitted' to it," she said, "We
understand their needs because ,
we look after the birds 350 days_
off the year.".
The 1997 executive of the
Perth, County .Eniu Producers,
besides Roth, is:: Ian Hyatt,
vice-president;. Rhonda
Ehgoetz,: secretary, Linda'
Kallman, treasurer, ".John
Hicknell, OFA -de legate; ,aand,
