Be .rounds 'em up, ropes 'em and takes them home to the farm. It's a craft he's become very talented at and the skill he pos- sesses is what prompts people from across Ontario to call on him whenever cattle decide to wander. .. But to give credit where credit is due, Holm admits the job would be much more diffi cult without the help,of his dogs. The yellow black mouth currs have a natural instinct, when it comes to tracking: loose cattle and boars. They are not a registered breed, but one that was created specifically for that purpose. They originated in Texas, but HoInci, a Brant Township farmer, is t e only one to his knowledge tha breeds the dogs in Ontario. While they are a calm, domestic pet around people, vvhen they work, there's no room for dog play. "When I saddle up my horse and put them in the trailer, they know there's action. They're just good family dogs until you do .that," said Holm. Holm has five dogs and some are better trackers than others. Jack, the King Pin, as Holm's wife Donna calls him, was the - first pup and is the most effi- cient for catching cattle. After Holm finds where the cows were last seen, he takes the dogs there to track the scent. They follow the scent with great intensity while .Hohn and other riders follow behind. "Then you, wait for the bark. They never bark until they strike cattle. Thenthey corner it and hold it until we.get there. If the beast wants to run, they run. it back to you," said Holm; And then the cowboys rope `em and return them to their owners. •turn to page 5A The working threesome - George Holm with Jack, one of his yellow: black mouth currs, and his horse.
