testing for Gr. 3 students

Some Bruce school
trustees are skeptical
about the purpose of a
province -wide testfor
grade three students.
scheduled to take place
over March and April of
this year..
"Is the testing being
done fairly, or is itjust to
sell changes in .educa-
tion?" asked. trustee Don
Stobo, ' •
Trustee, Dennis
Posthamus; wondered if
the tests 'will measure
knowledge or which chil-
dren are "better at prepar-
ing for the test".
`.`Any assessment is• as
good as its follow up,"
said trustee Carolyn Day, a
supporter .of province-
wide testing. "Itgives
teachers a chance to know
what's going on across the
province, and to evaluate
themselves?'
Superintendent David
Armstrong explained that
the test involves teaching
grade three students a• ten-
day unit including reading,
writing and . mathematics
skills.. He said the subject
matter is related. to the.

"I hope the,province
will look at this,. too," he

Two week .March breaks and year 'round schooling'
are not in the foreseeable future for students • of Bruce
and Grey,
The three school boards in the two counties have
adopted what Bruce board superintendent David
Armstrong calls a traditional calendar fox the 1997-98.
school year.
"We've had a lot of pressure in Bruce and Grey coun-
ties to stay with the traditional calendar," Armstrong
said, listing a, two. week Christmasbreak, one week
March break, and two months off in: the summer as part
of that • traditiona1 school year arrangement. He • said the
board previously investigated a two week March break,
which would 'mean starting , the school year in late
August. •
"People in Bruce and Grey were not overw helmingly
in support of that," Armstrong reported.
