PRE -ASSESSMENT WITH PSYCHOLOGIST IS REWIRED PRIOR TO:SMT ' OE PROGRAM should get quality time .. *from, page 4 • I have lived inWingham,. London, Sarnia and Guelph and have been involved in coaching hockey. The house league in London had the best systeut, When teams were Made up, each garrme, had ,a timer in the penalty box and. 'every two minutes . regardless of where the play was the whistle went and you, had to •change your lines. If a coach tried to put out his lines out of rotation, and he was caught, his team got a penalty. This allowed every player equal ice time. One of the. things that occurs too often on competitive teams ° are the coaches who • ,carry 15. players and use 10' or 1.1, and the others :get maybe one shift and sit" on the bench for the rest of the game. I say every. boy who •rs"on a competitive team should get quality ice time.. After all, how•is the player to improve if he sits On the bench withthe knowledge that the coach has no. faith in his ability to°compete. rwould•be inter- ested in seeing•the coach play on a team and be left on the bench and see what it felt like: • I heard of a case recently in the local area where a boy was playing..an out-ofetowri game and the parents decid- • ed to attend the game which was. in .a town 40 miles. away. The parents stated their boy Was .oneof the weak- . er players. and he got on the ice for one shift the entire game. How would you as a parent• feel if that was your • boy, - and how do you think that boy felt: • L am sure it. Would do nothing for his confidence: • , Was the game that important? If so, and„you were not going.to use him then you'shouldnot have taken him and subj ted'hi n o-tharhumrhatron-He-would:have-ieam:ed more and been. happier playing .with his equals in house league. Carretzky would have been the ' athletes they ate whether :they played., hockey., ball or golf as they are both naturally gifted _individuals. It should be noted also .that many boys are. great players at 10 or 12 because some are as tnawre as 13-year-olds,while others in thesariie age category are .only as mature -• as 9 -year-olds. Then later, say by 15, the boys who were smaller at 10 and 12 sprout up and 'become much more co-ordinated, and become the better hockey, players. All sport should be 'a fun game and it should be 'available'for all players toparttc- ipate. All parents on entering a sport facili- ty should have a strip of °Red. Green?s" duct tape placed so that they are unable to criti-' cize opponents, referees, and embarrass their child and themselves. At one time you either played on competitive teams or- ` you did not play hockey .because there was no house league program in place. flowevernow there are these leagues and (I might add that) .they allow one to play • -most physical sports, recreationally, up into your senior years, ,. The above is only my personal opinion and I am sure each of you have yours.
