So I :: mess I am not too virtuous as fast week my .patience ran out quickly while deal ing with Ma Bell. •I'd been: trying to connect with a Kincardine, number .off and, on for the past two weeks..; • .. Repeatedly, this soothing voice "Would come on - you know .the one : I mean. 'I called directory assistance - is .that..a :75 charge? and yes the number I was dialling was correct. . So,,.oext I,,called the operator as instructed. The : firstne gave o . gme some 'lingo about it being a long, distance ;number and I couldn't access it froin' . my location, This Was after T confirmed • with her that yes, 1 know and I. was dialling 1 and, the area code before the number. B"cin .with little virtue, in m g y stea -ex ploded and I said, "Listen, lady, . 'we've been dialing 1 and'the area•code ever since Bell changed the system way back when;hat do 'you mean I can't do that? I know the system is antique here, but get with it." "One moment, please. I'll connect you with our repair service." • "Repair may I help you?" "I. sincerely hope so:" And so I repeated niy story again. "I'm sorry: There's no such num - bet-." There's that voice again! "Excuse me. There is such a number. I've been call- ing8 to X it' for. months,..it's list -- ed ,in.thedirec- tory ' and direc- tory it -for assistance even has it." • "Is it a resi- dential or business listing. • "It's listed under both" "One moment please, I'll connect youwith our -'business repair " There's that voice again. ; After a brief conversation• with this • department, I was cut off - accidentally I`' assume After dialling .611 (repair) • and being prompted by a recorded mes- • sage, I finally, got' to- talk to a real per, son, who'also couldn'tfind the:number: But she did'igure out why Kincardine numbers' are through BMTS, not Bell. A quick call to BMTS ande mys- tery was solved the number had been . . disconnected I'm working on getting my 'virtue back! Some' drivers have. bad.habas ,Dear editor: .. I' have •an important issue regarding the safety of pedestrianswalking on Willoughby' and Inglis Streets. • Theparkitglot that is• located at the corner of g Willou hb " Inglis y and iS g Streets a r oss from tha fire hall) is beingmisused. I have, -seen many. motorists use this parking lot as a roadway.. Many of these people are travelling on Inglis' Street and 'are. wanting to :.turn onto • Willoughby Street. There is• a stop . sign at the end of the .road. Many people don't 'stop atthe sign,' instead 'they+, just cut. across the parking lot instead • of legally stopping.. These •people are usuallyin a hurry and don't take .a.. clear look before they` make their Move. The ipain concern that I have with people doing this •. is that, it's .dangerous! There are .white lines painted'alongthe edges of the parking lot for people' to walk in since: there:,is`tio Official . sidewalk. I'm; con- cerned that a'pe, destrian is going to be hit by one of these careless drivers. The pedestrian could be walk- ing along in the specific; area minding' their own busiiess and they may be hit .byaperson ern h h. sowho .a's Y misused the parking let. t: I was walking home . after work one night. I was g • just past .the parking lot • 'and someone dro,ve very fast .into the parking lot and did a- huge Ij,turn. Even • though.' was past •the parking' lot,' the noise itself frightened me. I turned around and saw a truck driving away,. Just • the sound scared ine enough Imagine if ;you . ,would have ''been . Walking ..along side the parking lot and that. truck had come. racing towards you. What would you have done or thought? It would':ie, a • scary experience: There is ,a sign posted right after the bridge, corning from. the "highway,, that states, ,"Watch. • for, • 'Elderly Pedestrians." This particu- lar area does have many elderly people because of the senior citizens apart- n ents .'located on Willoughby Street.. Elderly citizens usually don't walk as quickly asyounger. citi- e s and therefore z n r it • n 1 ld . e harder for wou b. a them h m to get out of the way of a veh icle. •It would be very hit. easy to and injure,. maybe even kill, e kil , a pedes- trian because of.a careless decision made by a. driver. The suggestion that I have are to make drivers " aware, who. do use', this route to re -think. what -they are doing. "Driving is not a right, it's, a privilege:" rs `: If drive, don't change the *ay that they.. , are approaching the stop sign, ..,,. T would like..to suggest to Iucknovv council to' place two, to, four cement, pillars;': or guard rails along one side of the parkitig Tot This will .create some inconveniences for people • who are parking inthis.
